Teto Territory or Teto's Turn refers to an animation meme, viral video and song utilizing the UTAU singing synthesizer software, particularly the Kasane Teto character and voicebank. Released in 2009, the video has become a staple of both the UTAU and Vocaloid communities, as well as early internet culture in general.

Origin

The melody of "Teto Territory" or "Teto's Turn" is based on two famous Touhou Project arrangements: "Always Cirno's Turn," which is in turn a cover of "Kero 9 Destiny." The original video was uploaded to niconico by user^[1] sm6157102 on February 14th, 2009. The original video has accumulated over 395,000 views within the past 17 years.

Spread

Western audiences were made aware of the song after a reupload was posted to YouTube^[2] on September 22nd, 2009, by user @CegooK, where it would spread quickly. The video, which is considered by many to be an iconic video in early internet history, has gone on to amass 39 million views in a bit over 16 years.

The video continued to spread in the following years, due in part to various fan animations and covers featuring characters from film and television. The video remained a popular part of internet culture well into its tenure, remaining relevant into the 2020s. On May 7th, 2023, YouTuber^[3] @northernfirealt posted a fan animation featuring characters from the television show Breaking Bad. The video received 57,000 views in about three years.

On April 26th, 2023, YouTuber^[4] @persephone-p posted an updated version of Teto Territory produced with Synth V. The video received 827,000 views in about three years.

On August 6th, 2023, YouTuber^[5] @crunchcontrol3119 uploaded an Invader Zim parody of Teto Territory, which received 308,00 in a bit over two years.
