That's Shit From A Butt is a catchphrase originally used on Facebook and popularized on X / Twitter in the early 2020s. The original post showed an image of someone's attempt at making vegan mousse, only to receive a reply that their dish looked like "shit from a butt." The catchphrase was initially used to describe things that look like poop on sites like Reddit and X and subsequently came to be used to insult or mock things.
Origin
On December 28th, 2020, Tumblr[1] user @memewhore posted a Facebook screenshot from a Facebook group called, "you can't just put things on a plate and call it food," where a member had posted an image of their "low carb mousse made with avocado and cocoa powder." A reply to the post read, "That's shit from a butt."
On January 5th, 2021, the image was reposted to /r/ComedyHeaven,[3] where it gathered over 60,000 upvotes in three years. On August 13th, the image was reposted to iFunny[2] by bold_meme, where it gathered over 26,000 smiles in three years.
Spread
On November 28th, 2021, the subreddit /r/ShitFromAButt[7] was created for people to share images of images of things, typically food, that resemble "shit from a butt" but are not. The subreddit /r/PoopFromAButt[8] was created on July 13th, 2022.
On August 6th, 2022, X / Twitter[4] user @memegodmel posted the earliest known use of the phrase "shit from butt" as an insult, writing, "white women on tik tok be like “did I just make the breakup anthem of 2022🤔?” And it’s shit from a butt," and gathering over 47,000 likes in two years (seen below, top).
On October 13th, X[5] user @f0lake wrote, "now that the trend is long gone can I just say those DIY foam mirrors looked like shit from a butt," gathering over 60,000 likes in two years (seen below, bottom).
On March 16th, 2024, X[6] user @DymeArachnyd quoted an image of a large blunt, writing, "thats shit from a butt," and gathering over 30,000 likes in a month (seen below).
