About

The Deep (Back on the Team), also known as The Deep Redemption, is a scene from the Amazon superhero TV series The Boys in which the character called The Deep rejoins The Seven after an unexpected announcement, revealing him in the background as he suddenly turns toward the camera looking over his shoulder. The clip, paired with the opening riff of "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' Roses, gained popularity as source material for video and GIF caption memes in late July 2022.

Origin

On June 3rd, 2022, episode three, titled "Barbary Coast," of season three of the superhero television series The Boys premiered.[1] In one scene of the episode, during the in-universe television show American Hero, the character The Deep, portrayed by Chace Crawford, is revealed as the final member to join the superhero team The Seven (scene shown below).

On July 18th, 2022, Twitter[2] user @thickgrayson98 posted a seven-second clip from the scene combined with the song "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' Roses, captioning it, "These MCU movies can’t get any worse right? / Taika Waititi:" The post gained over 3,200 views, 40 retweets and 300 likes in one week (shown below).

Spread

The clip did not achieve viral spread until July 21st, 2022, when Twitter[3] user @Midrulean_Hero posted a video caption meme about MultiVersus that gained over 291,000 views, 1,100 retweets and 11,200 likes in four days (shown below).

Starting on that day, the clip achieved virality on Twitter. A reupload by Twitter[4] user @shitindatoilet achieved viral spread as it was used in multiple video caption memes, with the video gaining over 4.5 million views in two days. For example, on July 23rd, 2022, Twitter[5] user @_mrundead_ posted a meme that received over 8,800 retweets and 98,500 likes in three days (shown below).
