There's a Cat In the Gay Bar is a redraw meme format based on a viral X / Twitter post in which the user @yascaoimhin shares a photograph of an orange cat sitting at the bottom of a set of stairs, bathed in green light, captioned, "There’s a cat in the gay bar." The post was made in December 2018 and became the subject of redraws over the following years, most of which replace the cat with another subject or character.
Origin
On December 11th, 2018, X[1] user @yascaoimhin posted a photograph of a cat sitting in the corner at the bottom of a set of stairs, bathed in green light, captioned, "There’s a cat in the gay bar." The post garnered over 64,000 likes and 16,000 reposts in six years.
Spread
The post garnered viral spread and inspired redraws throughout the early 2020s.
On January 20th, 2020, a version of the meme featuring the caption in a Snapchat text banner was reposted to the subreddit /r/comedyheaven,[2] garnering over 50,000 upvotes in four years.
On June 6th, 2021, X[3] artist @Infurnationale posted a redraw of the image replacing the cat with an anthro cat character, garnering over 900 likes in three years.
On May 11th, 2023, a redraw of the meme was posted to /r/rainworld[4] referencing the game Rain World, garnering over 1,500 upvotes in a year.
On June 29th, 2024, X[5] user @desprobably posted a redraw of the meme featuring the cartoon character Top Cat, garnering over 1,200 likes in three months.
