Spread

The phrase became increasingly popularized throughout 2024 and early 2025. On January 3rd, 2025, Redditor u/yournormaldino made a post to the subreddit /r/evangelionmemes^[2] about the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime, titled "This fandom is a prison 💔," garnering over 1,200 upvotes in a month.

On February 5th, X^[3] user @hiyospam posted "THIS FANDOM IS A PRISON" along with a screenshot of a TikTok comments section where someone recommends that a girl dye her hair blue and red, followed by another commenter writing, "You really think I needed all the guards at the hexgates," garnering over 48,000 likes in six days.
