The exact origins of the phrase "this fandom is a prison" are unconfirmed. The earliest known use of the catchphrase online was posted by X^[1] / Twitter user @Jamie__2006 on April 4th, 2024, in relation to a post about characters from the Flash series Spooky Month, garnering over 6,600 likes in 10 months.

Spread

The phrase became increasingly popularized throughout 2024 and early 2025. On January 3rd, 2025, Redditor u/yournormaldino made a post to the subreddit /r/evangelionmemes^[2] about the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime, titled "This fandom is a prison 💔," garnering over 1,200 upvotes in a month.

On February 5th, X^[3] user @hiyospam posted "THIS FANDOM IS A PRISON" along with a screenshot of a TikTok comments section where someone recommends that a girl dye her hair blue and red, followed by another commenter writing, "You really think I needed all the guards at the hexgates," garnering over 48,000 likes in six days.
