About
This Shit Probably Funny as Fuck, also known as This Shit Probably Funny as Hell or This Probably Funny, is a catchphrase used to caption memes written in foreign languages, reiterating that if the person spoke the meme's language and knew the context in the country's culture, it would likely be hilarious. The phrase was originally used on Twitter / X in a viral quote retweet that was posted in 2018, which captioned a tweet written in Arabic. Going into the 2020s, the catchphrase continually amassed usage.
Origin
On September 15th, 2018, since-deleted X user @ItsPoochFlair posted a reply to a tweet written in Arabic, writing, "This shit probably funny as hell." A screenshot of the tweet showing its date was reposted by Instagram[1] user @bildaddyy on September 19th, 2018, showing that it'd gained over 22,000 likes in four days (shown below, left). Replies to the deleted tweet still exist on X.[2]
A cropped screenshot of the tweet became more widely used in the years after, posted by the Instagram[3] page @urbanislandz on September 17th (shown below, right).
Spread
The image gained viral reposts on websites like Instagram[4] going into the 2020s. In 2023, the image and its catchphrase gained increased usage online, predominantly started by X[5] user @NxtDeterio on February 17th, 2023, who captioned the image, "this how it feels when I see family guy reference some random obscure white celebrity," gaining roughly 4,800 likes in nine months (shown below).
On February 18th, 2023, X[6] user @SHYESPICE copied @NxtDeterio's tweet and received more engagement, receiving roughly 57,000 likes in nine months.
Soon after, other variations surfaced online, such as a since-deleted tweet reposted by Instagram[8] user @willawanna on March 1st, which gained over 9,000 likes in eight months (shown below, left). On April 23rd, X[7] user @good_aigussy posted a similar iteration, receiving roughly 1,000 likes in seven months (shown below, right).
Also in early 2023, memes that were posted about Chinese Panda Reaction Images had similar sentiments, evident in a post shared by X[9] user @arthoefootjob on March 14th, 2023, that read, "chinese people slap their knees laughing at shit like this," gaining roughly 9,200 likes in eight months (shown below, left).
Going into late 2023, usage of the "This Shit Probably Funny as Fuck" catchphrase and its variants continued to gain viral usage, evident in a tweet shared by X[10] user @JUNlPERBOT on November 5th, 2023, which received roughly 16,000 likes in four days (shown below, right).
