About
Torta, also known as a Torta Girl, is an internet slang term for an overweight, chubby Latina girl, borrowing its name from the popular Mexican sandwich. The term gained virality in the 2020s, expressed in memes and viral posts on TikTok, Twitter / X and Instagram, among other social media sites. The term's use mirrored the rise of "Edgar," a slang term used to describe Latino men with a certain haircut. Edgars and Tortas were often the subjects of memes, predominantly posted by Latino and Hispanic people. The term Torta Pounder also gained use in the 2020s, used to describe a man who seeks out Tortas over other women.
Origin
The slang term "torta" was used as early as 2003, per the earliest definition for the term on Urban Dictionary, [1] which was uploaded by user Lil Man on July 17th, 2003, gaining over 490 likes in 22 years (shown below).

Spread
The term gained viral use on TikTok many years later, notably starting in 2023. For instance, on April 25th, TikToker[2] @naomiheartsxo posted a video she called "A torta for a torta," in which she and her friend were shopping and making jokes about her "torta" size. Over two years, the video received roughly 45,200 likes (shown below).

On December 22nd, 2023, TikToker[3] @bamfomania posted a podcast clip of people discussing the term, receiving over 16,900 likes in two years (shown below).

On August 15th, 2024, rapper Adamn Killa released a snippet for his song "Torta Pounder" on X,[4] receiving over 4,900 likes in nine months (shown below). He later released the music video on YouTube[5] on March 16th, 2025.

On August 31st, 2024, TikToker[6] @cbreezyofficial_ posted a POV skit, about, "You pounded your first torta." The video showed him falling to the ground, set to the hook from the song "Knock You Down" ("I never thought I'd fall for you so hard as I did"). Over nine months, the video received over 1.4 million likes (shown below).

On January 14th, 2025, TikToker[7] @lilliana8893 posted a video in which she told the viewer, "For all of you commenting, I am not a torta. I'm a pan dulce." Over four months, her video gained roughly 1.1 million likes (shown below).

Torta memes continued on TikTok heading into May 2025. For instance, on May 19th, TikToker[8] @ihnocent posted a video, asking what a torta was again, then adding the I'm a Visual Learner BTW catchphrase. Over 11 days, the video received roughly 199,600 likes (shown below).
