About
Two Guys On A Bus refers to an exploitable image macro of two men sitting on opposite sides of a bus with one looking out the window at a rock wall and the other looking at a beautiful view. The inspirational cartoon was created in August 2013 by Brazilian illustrator Genildo Ronchi. In 2021, the cartoon was used as a meme template on Twitter and Reddit, among other platforms.
Origin
The original image used in the meme format was created by Brazilian cartoonist Genildo Ronchi, who has a social media presence on both Instagram[1] and Facebook.[2] On August 24th, 2013, Genildo uploaded a cartoon to his website[3] called, "As vezes só depende de nós," which translates in English to, "Sometimes it just depends on us." The cartoon (shown below) has text overlaid on top that reads, "Escolha o Lado Feliz da Viva!" or "Choose the Happy Side of Life!" in English.
Genilo's cartoon was translated into English, Arabic and other languages going into 2014. However, the image didn't receive exploitable meme usage until 2019 within Brazilian Twitter circles. For example, on August 14th, 2019, Twitter[4] account @vittor posted a meme (shown below) with text overlay reading, "Não fuma cigarro / Fuma cigarro," which translates in English to, "Doesn't smoke cigarettes / Smokes cigarettes." The meme (shown below) received roughly 18,000 likes on Twitter over the course of two years.
Spread
In April 2021, the cartoon saw further spread and usage as a template on Twitter, still within Brazilian circles. For example, Twitter[5] account @gjsccp posted a version on April 23rd, 2021, (shown below, left) that received roughly 2,800 likes over the course of seven months. Twitter[6] account @buuckz posted a version on September 23rd, 2021 (shown below, right), which received 337 likes over the course of two months.
On November 15th, 2021, Redditor Elk_Strict uploaded an English-written version of the meme to the subreddit /r/me_irl.[7] The captions read, "Didn't take a shit before leaving the house / Took a shit before leaving the house." The meme (shown below) received roughly 10,000 upvotes over the course of seven days.
Inspired by the meme above, the template saw more usage on other platforms going into the rest of November 2021. On November 18th, 2021, Twitter[8] user @frequentpuker posted the first known variation on the platform, with captions reading, "did not get a little beverage for the road / got a little beverage for the road." The meme (shown below) received roughly 259,600 likes over the course of four days.
