Vanilla the Rabbit is an anthropomorphic female rabbit from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise depicted with tan and brown fur with a pink and red dress. She is the mother of the character Cream the Rabbit and first appeared in the 2002 video game Sonic Advance 2. She is portrayed as a calm and motherly character who lives a quiet lifestyle. Online, Vanilla the Rabbit became an increasingly prevalent character in both SFW and rule 34 fan art and memes, seeing a spike in prominence in early 2022.

Origin

Vanilla the Rabbit's first appearance is in Sonic Advance 2, released on the Game Boy Advance in 2002.^[1] At the end of the game, Sonic saves Vanilla from Eggman, catching her from falling in mid-air (shown below).

Spread

Vanilla the Rabbit has appeared in several Sonic the Hedgehog games since 2002, including Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic Rush. She also appears in the Sonic X anime (shown below) and the Archie and IDW comic series. Vanilla has never appeared as a playable character.

Fan Art

Vanilla the Rabbit has inspired fan art over the course of the 2000s, including SFW and rule 34 art (examples from Deviant Art^[2] and Twitter^[3] shown below).

On July 30th, 2019, Twitter^[4] user @MysticalPP posted a piece of crossover fan art featuring Vanilla and Doomguy, gaining over 3,500 likes in three years (shown below).

Fan Animation

Vanilla the Rabbit has been the subject of a variety of fan animations and videos. On December 8th, 2015, YouTuber Alex the Bordercollie posted a slideshow music video set to the song "Me and Emily" by Rachel Proctor, a song about being a single mother, playing off the same themes with Vanilla and her daughter Cream, gaining over 128,000 views in seven years (shown below).

On March 21st, 2021, YouTuber Speedy Blue posted an original video made in "VR Chat": where Sonic goes to Vanilla's house and she hits on him, gaining over 235,000 views in a year (shown below).
