About

"What about very old friends?" is a quote from the 2001 film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. It is frequently used as a setup of puns or similar jokes.

Origin

In the film, Gandalf (Ian McKellen) arrives at Bag's End to celebrate the 111st birthday of Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm). When he knocks on Bilbo's door, Bilbo thinks he's just another local hobbit, until Gandalf introduces himself as a "very old friend" and Biblo realizes who he is.

Gandalf: (knocks on Bilbo's door)
Bilbo: "No, thank you! We don't want any more visitors, well-wishers, or distant relations!"
Gandalf: "And what about very old friends?"
Bilbo: (opens door) "Gandalf?"

We don't want anymore visitors, well-wishers, or distant relations! And what about very old friends? Gandalf!
