About
Where Are You From? refers to a snowclone popular on Twitter which imagines a dialogue where a person asks the poster where in the United States they're from. The poster responds by saying their hometown, which is unfamiliar to the question asker, and after a series of exchanges, the poster resigns and says they're from a famous city in their home state.
Origin
On October 11th, 2017, Twitter user @JayyWavve[1] posted the earliest known example of the format, saying they were from Frisco, Texas before resigning and saying they were from Dallas. The tweet gained over 4,100 retweets and 16,000 likes (shown below).
Spread
JayyWavve's tweet began a Twitter practice where people would quote tweets with the format with their own versions. For example, on February 22nd, 2018, Twitter user @man_cole_b quote-tweeted @JayyWavve's tweet with a variation specific to the Houston area of Texas, gaining over 1,900 retweets and 6,300 likes (shown below, left). Two days later, user @cam_dominguez33 quote-tweeted @man_cole_b with a California-themed iteration of the snowclone, gaining over 880 retweets and 3,700 likes (shown below, right).
After trending in February of 2018, the snowclone saw another resurgence in May of 2018. Some popular tweets from then include a May 27th tweet by @24Levine about New York City that gained over 870 retweets and 2,900 likes (shown below, left). Another Texas-themed variation, posted by @nickhines12 on May 23rd, gained over 4,400 retweets and 15,000 likes (shown below, right). After the May resurgence, the meme was covered by Mashable.[2]
