About
Where Y'all Sitting?, also known as Lunch Table, is an exploitable social game originating on Twitter in which someone posts an image of labeled school cafeteria tables where others can choose to "sit." The game began with stan Twitter accounts in late July 2019 and progressed to broader categories like fashion and more mainstream subjects.
Origin
On July 30th, 2019, Twitter user @journalsfire[2] posted one of the earliest known cafeteria table edits and asked, "Where are you sitting?" The tables were label with various Justin Bieber songs (shown below). The tweet gained over 100 likes in a week.
Spread
On July 30th, 2019, Twitter user @bangtanhxpe[3] used a VectorToons[1] cafeteria image for a UP10TION variation of the game (shown below, left). The tweet garnered over 100 likes in a week. The next day, @miniesjen[4] used the same image on another K-Pop variation which gained over 5,000 likes and 700 retweets in six days (shown below, right).
On August 2nd, many non-stan accounts adopted the trend. Twitter user @lcveblanchett[5] created a version which groups together various actresses (shown below, left). The tweet accumulated over 3,700 likes and 400 retweets in four days. That same day, @iconicaesthetic[6] posted the image labeled with various Disney Channel Original Movies (shown below, right). The tweet gained over 1,000 likes and 80 retweets in four days.
Gordon Ramsay
On August 6th, 2019, Gordon Ramsay [7] retweeted @firstwefeast's Where Y'all sitting post that has Ramsay sitting at a table alone. Ramsay commented, "Any reason I’m all alone ??? I do play well with others….." (shown below). The tweet gained over 458,100 likes and 67,300 retweets in two days.
That same day, Twitter user @deviIette[8] responded by saying, "Everyone is scared about what you’ll say about their lunch" (shown below, left). The tweet garnered over 3,900 likes in two days. The next day, @KevB123[9] stated, "It’s lunch, Gordon. No one wants to listen to you complain about how dry the Salisbury steak is" which gathered over 190 likes in a day (shown below, right).
