You're Stuck on a Flight, Where Are You Sitting? is an exploitable meme format in which a user is asked to pick a seat on a plane carrying characters from a certain fandom (especially anime) for a long-distance flight, usually a 10-hour or 20-hour flight. A derivative of the Where Y'all Sitting format, the meme achieved virality on Reddit in June 2024.

Origin

On April 16th, 2024, Instagram^[1] user vicfuda0 posted a version of the Where Y'all Sitting meme format that offered to pick a seat on a long-distance flight with characters from various popular anime series. The post (shown below) garnered over 45,000 likes in two months.

Spread

The format did not see significant spread until June 2024. On May 23rd, 2024, Redditor Typical-Actuator-273 posted a One Piece version of the meme that garnered over 2,900 reposts in the /r/OnePiece^[2] subreddit in one month (shown below).

On June 20th, Redditor BigDogDoom posted a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure version of the meme that received over 2,700 upvotes in the /r/StardustCrusaders^[3] subreddit in five days (shown below, left). Later on June 20th, Redditor Anitque_Potato1965 posted a DoTA 2 meme that garnered over 1,400 upvotes in /r/rDoTA2^[4] in the same period (shown below, right).

In the following days, the format achieved viral popularity on Reddit, with versions of the meme appearing in multiple meme subreddits and on other social media sites.
