About
Declaring something "is now a meme" or "is a meme" is a method of forcing memes. It is prominent on imageboards like 4chan, but can be (and often is) used on virtually any forum.
"X is now a meme" often has a necessary condition. It is sometimes used with "Post Ending in X" – where the OP or another user gets to “decide” the status of the meme.
Example:
- OP: If this post ends in 7’s, Pringles is now a meme.
Usage
Perhaps the most famous usage of "X is now a meme" is the "Milhouse is now a Meme" / "Milhouse is not a meme" phenomenon.
As the Milhouse example shows, "X is now a meme" is a controversial way of forcing memes. Although the OP might gather some support for his/her new "meme," it often receives a lot of backlash.
But not always. (NSFW)
Nevertheless, people who attempt to force memes are usually very unsuccessful, especially through the "X is now a meme" method.
