Our Unity Personal plan will remain free and there will be no Runtime Fee for games built on Unity Personal. We will be increasing the cap from $100,000 to $200,000 and we will remove the requirement to use the Made with Unity splash screen. No game with less than $1 million in trailing 12-month revenue will be subject to the fee. For those creators on Unity Pro and Unity Enterprise, we are also making changes based on your feedback. The Runtime Fee policy will only apply beginning with the next LTS version of Unity shipping in 2024 and beyond. Your games that are currently shipped and the projects you are currently working on will not be included - unless you choose to upgrade them to this new version of Unity. We will make sure that you can stay on the terms applicable for the version of Unity editor you are using - as long as you keep using that version. For games that are subject to the runtime fee, we are giving you a choice of either a 2.5% revenue share or the calculated amount based on the number of new people engaging with your game each month. Both of these numbers are self- reported from data you already have available. You will always be billed the lesser amount.

John Riccotiello may not be 100% at fault

What changed In 2020 Unity went public, and a bunch of s--- heads bought their way onto Unity's board of directors. Ultimately the CEO works for the Board, so when these new bosses tell him to do something self destructive, he does it. Here are the names you should be talking about instead of John: Tomer Bar Zeev Roelof Botha Egon Durban. Remember IronSource, that dog s--- monetization company that absolutely everyone in the industry dumped and was circling the drain until Unity bought them for $4.4 billion? Tomer Bar Zeev is the founder of IronSource, and following the merger he became Unity's 3rd president (along with John and Marc)... yes, this is the a------ who sold a package of malware under the guise of monetization software & ultimately the root cause of this install tax. Given the IronSource's history of malware, I feel that it is safe to say that the Unity runtime will likely start getting flagged by antivirus programs and casually request admin rights during installation. How Unity got infected with IronSource is that Sequoia Capitol and Silver lake pledged to invest $1 billion into Unity if the deal went through. Frankly, the math doesn't add up for Unity to trade $4.4 billion to buy a plague blanket of a company, only to receive $1 billion in return. Especially when a rival mobile monetization company offered to pay Unity $17 billion if the called off the IronSource deal and merge with them instead. Unless that $1b was for the sake of C-suite bonuses, in which case all of this makes perfect sense. But who the Hell is Roelof Botha & Egon Durban, and who are they important names? Roelof is a Director of Sequoia, Egon is the founder of Silver Lak, and both of them have ties back to Elon Musk ... which is pretty telling for how fast Unity has caught on fire. If Egon's name is familiar, it is because he was on Twitter's Board and was the one who pushed to have them accept the deal & then got thrown off the board when they realised that he was just spying for Elon during the resulting lawsuit. He also was the one who helped Elon with his fake " Taking Tesla private" scam. Roelof was the CFO of PayPal before it got acquired and has a long history of being involved with mergers that result in a lot of money for some, but absolute s--- deals for end users. Looping back to the top... I think John is done with Unity, but not in the "yay, us consumers have protested hard enough to get him fired" kind of way the internet wants. I think he was done in 2020 when he went from being the guy actually running the company, to the guy who answers to a room full of investment f--- heads (of the 13 board members, 11 are investment managers), and then gets to take the blame for their s--- decisions. I feel like the reason why he sold his stock is because he knew this was a s--- idea that was going to tank the company, but these assholes wouldn't listen. So he cashed out his stock and will be announcing his retirement at the start of Q4. Don't be shocked when Tomer Bar Zeev gets named as his replacement.

$HEY GAMERS! Today, Unity (the engine we use to make our games) announced that they'll soon be taking a fee from developers for every copy of the game installed over a certain threshold - regardless of how that copy was obtained. Guess who has a somewhat highly anticipated game coming to Xbox Game Pass in 2024? That's right, it's us and a lot of other developers. That means Another Crab's Treasure will be free to install for the 25 million Game Pass subscribers. If a fraction of those users download our game, Unity could take a fee that puts an enormous dent in our income and threatens the sustainability of our business. And that's before we even think about sales on other platforms, or pirated installs of our game, or even multiple installs by the same user!!! This decision puts us and countless other studios in a position where we might not be able to justify using Unity for our future titles. If these changes aren't rolled back, we'll be heavily considering abandoning our wealth of Unity expertise we've accumulated over the years and starting from scratch in a new engine. Which is really something we'd rather not do. On behalf of the dev community, we're calling on Unity to reverse the latest in a string of shortsighted decisions that seem to prioritize shareholders over their product's actual users. hate it here. -Aggro Crab$

incredulous Â Joined: Today Posts: 1 Current Unity employee here. I feel compelled to post something because I'm completely appalled at some of the initial choices for this new pricing model and most importantly at the poor and confusing communications around it. I and many, many of my colleagues have had a very bad last 12+ hours. We work hard to give you the tools to create amazing games all the way from indie to large studios. We love celebrating your successes with the Unity engine and many of us are up in arms internally about all this. Let's explain what the changes are about in plain English: 1. Unity needs to generate more revenue to eventually be a profitable company so we can sustain developing Unity for many years to come. Employees need to be paid or there's no engine, as simple as that. 2. Many very profitable game studios pay very little to Unity compared to their other costs of business, despite the Unity engine being an essential part of their game/product. The price changes are aimed at this ~10% of customers as a way to scale their costs with success via revenue+installs. 3. Yes, there's also a will to bring more users on Unity pro when they use Unity to build a product for a business with meaningful revenue. Sadly, good news of the extended availability of Unity free to larger funding thresholds and some extra features were buried in everything else. To focus on a few key points that have somewhat changed since the initial announcements... Sadly the OP and FAQS haven't been fully updated yet with some of these changes. 1. Installs 1. Installs are meant to be per unique user. 2. Cl, tests, and other automations will not be charged 3. We don't want to charge for fraudulent installs (install bombs, piracy, etc.) 4. There will not be an embedded "phone home" mechanism 5. Unity hasn't actually completely figured out how to count installs yet. Whatever the solution is, it will be conservative. It will potentially/probably undercount installs, but definitely not overcount. 2. We will not charge for charities 3. For subscription services, Unity will talk with the subscription service's distributor, not the game creator 4. There will be an online calculator very soon (TM) to model your potential costs 5. Yes, in this current form, it's possible for successful games with very high install counts and low enough per- install revenue to lose money when more people install their game. 1. When this is raised internally, the answer is "we would fix this with the customer to not bankrupt them". It would be great to prevent this upstream in the actual policy. Know also that all of the concerns that are understandably blowing up at the moment have been raised internally by many weeks before this announcement. Why it was decided to rush this out anyway in this way I can only speculate about. Personal hopes for further corrections to this pricing model: 1. Address point 5 above so we don't punish success 2. Reverse course to charge per-install fees to already published games (that still generate sizable revenue) 1. And change the terms to guarantee that a similar retroactive price change can never happen again! 3. Get our act together in terms of comms and marketing to avoid generating so much needless panic and anxiety both from you all and internally. Take care of each other, and take a break from all this for your mental health if you need it.
