Akame ga Kill was fucked up, but in a good way, I see why you like it so much. I personally don't think it beat Free, but only because I prefer lighthearted shows to… whatever the fuck just happened there, but if that wasn't the case then Akame would win. It's definitely a highlight to such a mediocre season. Plus, the music was fantastic, but that was to be expected given who did the music (same guy as Gatchaman Crowds and Jojo)

Edit: Almost forgot to mention, but the show gets points for the lack of censoring. That's super awesome, even if it makes it even more fucked up.

@random21
Glad you liked it, and yeah, thank god for no censoring.

I personally don’t think it beat Free, but only because I prefer lighthearted shows to…

Real talk, I know I am partially to blame because I was also comparing them jokingly, but that's like comparing Apples and blood oranges. They are both great in their respective genres.

Anyways,
>mfw watching the first episode

HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT.
THE HYPE WAS OFF THE CHARTS AND IT STILL BLEW ME AWAY.
Also, gotta love the silly faces and humor during some of the most fucked up shit imaginable.

Yeah I was thinking that myself, it's hard to compare what are essentially the exact opposites. They are both exceptional in their own separate genres. Oh, and one more thing about Akame, how much of the show will be like the first half rather than the second? because I prefer the action to the typical shounen antics, which I found pretty dull

Anyway, so last show of the say, Dramatical Murder, and I guess my overall opinion is that it was HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIBBBBBBBBBBBBLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

That was the SHITTIEST thing I've ever seen. I WANT MY TWENTY MINUTES BACK. The guys aren't even that attractive. Wait, correction, THEY AREN'T REMOTELY ATTRACTIVE. You know you've failed at a manservice show when the guys are fucking butt ugly

Last edited Jul 06, 2014 at 03:05PM EDT

@random21

There will always been some goofy antics here and there, but the fights and serious moments are a constant, so don't worry. The first half of the episode, like in the manga, is intentionally lighthearted to throw you off.

Good. I just really wasn't struck of the generic Shounen stuff, if I wanted the boob jokes then I'd just watch Rail Wars again. The joke is really, really tired now

Overusing boob jokes, and poorly, can get old, but I don't know, a young hick being swindled by an attractive con artist is pretty funny. I honestly don't think boob jokes can ever be considered "overused" if done right. Its a staple of comedy. Attraction is something everyone can identify with. That's just me though. Anyways, boob jokes aren't really that common in Akame.

I heard it was kinda meh.

…I think I'll start to avoid this thread.

Well, Akame was excellent, the first episode shows perfectly how the show is going to be. It begins with a few jokes and then everything goes to hell…this is going to be so fun.

Oh right, Space Dandy is back. [Insert hype/win image here]

Last edited Jul 06, 2014 at 06:03PM EDT

Good to know. Looking at Rail Wars and some of the shows from last season, there's a reason I see them as overused. It's not so much that I find the concept unfunny, it's just where they go with it. It's the same with anything really, when you see something the first time, it's funny. It starts getting unfunny when the same joke is done all the time. Like both Brynhildr and Soul Eater NOT did the flat chest joke. Now if you were to have heard the joke the first time in the former, you wouldn't find it as funny in the latter, and vice versa. That's the thing about boob jokes, they're overused, but they don't go anywhere with them, it's either "You have comically big boobs" or "You have no boobs", often it's both. The problem is they don't try and go anywhere with it, I'd have a lot more resistance to them if they didn't keep rehashing the same one. This isn't even going into the SJ side of why I don't like them, but that's the last thing I want to bring up here.

I'll admit they go somewhere different with the joke here, but it's still kinda falling into the first variation of the joke. To be fair, there isn't many places you can go with boob jokes besides those two variations. I'm glad there's not much of it.

@Loli
I haven't seen the show myself, I'm just going off what others I've said. Anything is better than the other crap that's been on this season, so I'm still going to check it out if you say it's good.

I just watched akame ga kill!

I was looking for a grimdark series like this since the end of Attack on titan.
Ladies, gentlemen, you've won a follower, I'll enjoy this as much as you.

This also deserve an article in this website

So I've watched the first episodes of Aldnoah Zero and Akame ga Kill, and here are my thoughts.
Aldnoah Zero- I feel like this show has lots of potential. The whole conflict between Earth and Mars seems interesting, and I like how they're examining both sides of the conflict. Looking forward to watching more. I wonder how well the CGI mechs will be integrated into the series, though. I hope they do it well, as that could be the show's biggest flaw if they handle it poorly. It does look like the budget for the show was pretty big, so I'm not too worried. Also, eggs are on sale.
Akame ga Kill- Well that was a lot for a first episode. The show appears to be dark fantasy, from what I can gather, so I hope we see some interesting monster designs in the upcoming episodes. For those that are reading the manga, how big of a role do these "Danger Beasts" in the overall story? While I wouldn't mind if the anime focuses mainly on the conflict between Night Raid and the corrupt government, I'm a big fan of creative creature design, and it would be really nice if Akame could fulfill that. Otherwise, it looks like it will be a fun, gore-filled action anime, which is what I was hoping that it would be.

In other news, as part of my goal to read more manga, I've begun reading Gantz. My verdict after about 40 chapters: Gantz is really weird, really bloody, really perverted, and really addictive. Seriously though, one of the chapters is titled "Naked Suicide Girl". Interpret that as literally as possible. I have a feeling Gantz is going to be one hell of a ride.

I've been pondering on Akame, and I have a complaint or two that I have to get out, probably the enjoyment hadn't weared off earlier, so I couldn't get my critical cap fully on (outside my complaints for the first half). My main complaint really is the out of place comedy. I really dislike the use of comedy in the second half, Akame being really clueless during the confrontation near the shed as well as (what I assume was Braht) getting all sparkly near the end. It really took me out what was a tense and exciting scene. It really helps destroy the atmosphere I was feeling earlier.

I also disliked how it took like two seconds for him to get over his friends deaths, that should have been played out more. I've seen a lot of negative opinions about this show, the one I disagree with the most is the hint of political undertones, but here's an example for Loli of where just because I say "opinions are kinda meh", doesn't mean I'm saying "I thought it was meh".

how big of a role do these “Danger Beasts” in the overall story?

They play a pretty big role. Sure, they show up pretty often in the story, but the main role they play is

the fact that many of the Tiegu's (the super weapons) are made from the Danger beasts. For example, Leon's belt transforms her into a danger beast/human hybrid, Braht and Wave's armor are literally living Danger Beats that erupt from the ground and envelop them.

Anyways, just throwing it out there, Loli and I liked Akame before it was cool and mainstream and shit. We are the only real fans. Y'all fags just be jumping on the bandwagon.

He will cry about it plenty in the next episode, trust me. He doesn't get over any time soon. As for the out of place comedy, I can see where you are coming from, but I don't feel the same way. then again, having read the manga, I knew he was't over it while you were under the impression that he was.
Just want to point out something for people watching Akame who haven't read the manga. Just because it is infamous for its gore and darkness, it's still at its core a shonen. Do the characters mourn the deaths of their comrades? yes. Do the dark turn of events affect them? well, they are used to it, but still yes. That being said, over the top action is a constant and the characters find plenty of time to joke around during there downtime. Don't expect something like AoT, because that's not really what Akame is. Then again, if you found AoT to be too slow or angsty, Akame might be more to your liking.

Yeah, the impression the first episode gave off suggested it. Straight after it happened he's dragged off in typical shounen style without seemingly grieving (despite giving Miss Psyco Bitch what she deserved, which redeemed the character for me after the first half). Glad to know his dead friends get more grieving, for a moment I felt like I was grieving them more than he did.

I forgot to praise the animation. Good damn, the way they move is just great. The action is fluid and doesn't rely too much on speed lines with still images. It keeps a constant flow in the action. I hope they keep that up. The gore is pretty realistic and I like that. the way shcere throws the blood off her blade was really cool. Overall, the first episode was a great adaption of the manga. Can't wait for next week.

Watched Akame ga Kill finally. It was… good, sure; very good and fast-paced for a first episode, and I love the animation, but at the same time I'm worried about the future of it. While I can watch heavy blood and gore, I can't say I'm a fan of it. That is, I'm not a fan of blood and gore for the sake of blood and gore.

Don't get me wrong, I love that it doesn't censor itself and I'm all for violence. It's just that I'm hoping a majority of the heavy violence will actually be plot-oriented. If it turns out that there will be tons of gore porn for "those kinds" of people to get off to, I'm out.

Also watched the first episode of the new SAO. Not much happened in it, so kind of a weak first episode, but I'm excited to be rid of fairies and get into guns.

EDIT: Yo Random, if I'm gonna watch Durarara!!, is the English dub any good?

Last edited Jul 07, 2014 at 04:02PM EDT

Couldn't get past the first 5 minutes of Rail Wars. Random 21 was right, too much fanservice. I might have continued if not for the overuse of it.

So I watched the first episode of SAO II, not bad. I agree with Deltamelon, out with the fairies finally.

So now it's just Akame ga Kill and Glasslip I have to watch.

Okay, I'm already backlogged on the whole watching everything thing, and I have yet to watch anything that's not on Crunchyroll (I'll watch you eventually, Tokyo Ghoul) but here's what I've got so far.

Free! Season 2: I lol'd. Gou is so hilarious about muscles. Also, THE NEW CHARACTER DOES NOT HAVE A GIRLY NAME THIS IS HERESY! Still though, 9/10.
Sailor Moon Crystal: The first episode wasn't all that different from the first episode of the original. The art, is definitely beautiful and the sound quality is good now so it doesn't hurt my ears when Usagi says stuff. The CGI transformation sequence is cool and the Moon Tiara Boomerang is more than a glowy stick! 9.5/10
SAO II: I love SAO (or Aincrad at least) but this first episode was too…expositiony. It was kinda boring. 6/10
Locoldol: It was okay, I guess. That uncle guy is pretty shady though. 6/10
GLASSLIP: Did anything even happen in the first episode? I mean, it wasn't boring or anything, but I don't think anything actually happened. The art is nice to look at though. 7/10
DRAMAtical Murder: This was actually really interesting. It has a kind of Durarara! feel to it (I should finish Durarara! sometime). 8/10
Aldnoah Zero: It seems like it might be interesting, although I can't even tell who the main character is. The idea behind it is cool though. 7/10
ARGEVOLLEN: but we can call it Gundam, because that's basically what this is. There's just no space battles…yet. It's still good though. 7/10
Samurai Jam-Bakumatsu Rock: I thought this was super cool and it seems to be going in a good direction. Also, it gets its name from the same material that Gintama did and I find that kind of funny. 9/10
Rail Wars!: Did I watch the same show as everyone else in this thread? I swear I only saw fanservice like 3 times. All I really have to say on this show is that there is an anime about everything. Even trains. I am interested enough to keep watching though. 7.5/10
Akame Ga Kill!: The first episode gave me feels. I hate this show already. 9/10
Blue Spring Ride: I was about to stop watching cause the introduction wasn't very well done at all, but it was interesting once the actual show started. It's interesting to see how people react to knowing that someone the knew in the past changed over time as most people do. 8/10
HaNaYaMaTa: Probably my least favorite so far. The main character is just so stubborn to trying new things and it's pretty annoying. I don't know if I want to watch episode 2. 4/10
Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun: This is definitely my favorite show of the season so far. I did not stop laughing the entire time and I cannot wait for the next episode! 10/10

@CrouchingSloth
Gantz is definitely one hell of ride. I remember reading it because Trick Lobo recommended it (gee that was a long time ago). I then read more than 200 chapters in a single day. Addictive is putting it lightly.

Let me put it this way, If you were fine with the first episode, that's how its going to be. The intense violence in Akame serves a purpose plot wise, and one I would liken to Dexter. The violence serves as a justification for the protagonists actions.

I just saw Rail Wars and I am very disapointed. Where is the excessive fanservice I was promised!?! One panty shot? One shot of boobs bouncing? I demand more!

Rail Wars has unnecessary fanservice, that was my main complaint. It is a show about trains, the fanservice should be on them. My whole "overused boob jokes" rant can easily be applied to Rail Wars. Did you enjoy it otherwise?

I'm still not done with everything but I've watched more shows since yesterday.

Tokyo Ghoul: From the first few minutes, I thought this was going to be another one of those overhyped shows that was just dark for the sake of being dark, but it provides an interesting perspective on…eating people. I mean, if you suddenly hated all food and found people to be tasty, what would you do? 9/10
Himegoto: WHERE DA HOOD, WHERE DA HOOD, WHERE DA HOOD AT!? That was the opening for the version I watched. I don't actually remember anything after that besides that it seemed really similar to Hayate no Gotoku! DAHOOD/10
Jinsei: This show is retarded. Why is it so entertaining? 8/10
Barakamon: This was actually really good. I can't really explain why though. I guess I just felt that I could relate to the MC. 8.5/10
Pri Para: Oh god. OH GOD! OH GOD!!! This show…is probably the most confusing thing I've ever seen in my life. In fact, I can't even give it a score, so I've called my friends to give me a second opinion on it. TBA/10

I was just saying that I expected more based on what I was reading and was underwhelmed. It's not quite enough to be comically over the top (or sexy), but its there enough that's it's an odd choice. I was expecting something along the lines of Highschool of the Dead, and for the record, I hate that show.
As for the show, it's not terribly interesting to me. I'm sure if I had an interest in trains, I might like it more, kind of like how I like Uppote! and Girls und Panzer* ….but its not bad… Per se. I will probably try watching more. It's a 6.5/10 for me right now.

  • I mentioned Girls und Panzer, but let me get one thing straight. Girls und Panzer is a great anime. The quality of Girls und Panzer is for above that of either Rail Wars or Uppote!

Oh yes, I forget to talk about what I thought about Himegoto.

Himegoto: ugh….. It's one of those shows…. 4 minute long episodes…. I was so disapointed. Don't get me wrong, I loved plastic nee-san with its 2 minute long episodes, so it could still work, but I wanted full length episodes damn it. I can't give a score because its too early to tell, but it was mildly amusing. I was really disapointed also to find out that everyone at school will know he is crossdressing. The fake op though, that was hilarious. …/10

Has anyone seen Chaika- The Coffin Princess? Is it worth watching?

It's a good show if you like the action/fantasy genre. Although I feel like it's a little underrated, it's definitely worth a shot.
It was an 8/10 for me, one of my favorites from the spring season, it has a really great cast of characters and some great funny moments. Looking forward to the second season

Last edited Jul 08, 2014 at 07:59PM EDT

I guess I'll watch it then. I hear its getting a second season, so that's good if I end up liking it.

Sabagebu!: Oh wow. Just found my second favorite anime of the season. This show is really funny. I have a feeling it will get overlooked because of shows like Akame, Sailor moon, and SAO 2 to name a few, and that's a shame. Random 21, I have a feeling you will like this show. I don't know why exactly, just call it a hunch. Also, those tired of fanservice will be happy to know that despite being a cast full of girls, since this is a shĹŤjo, the fanservice is almost nonexistent. Kudos to this show for having a pretty hilarious breast joke though. Please watch it everyone! It's worth your time, I promise!
9.5/10

Just like Random21 did last season with The World is Still Bueatiful, I am going to remind you guys to watch this every week.

So I just got done watching Lucky Star. Since almost all of the internet considers this "entry shit", I want a Slice of Life/Comedy anime with more interesting characters substituted for a plot. Already have Azumanga Daioh and Nichijou put on my watch list.

lol I saw Tokyo Ravens and I liked it.

Anyway, Coppelion is great. The art of that anime is fantastic, same goes for the music.

Kyousougiga is another good option.

Tokyo ravens felt quite weird for me, even though i enjoyed it a bit. Could you just tell what they are about? I am 4 episodes away from finishing Magi and i need some sort of emergency replacement.

Coppelion is about three girls with the mission of saving people in a devastated and radiated Tokyo…this reminds me, I have to read the manga.

Kyousougiga is about a badass little girl named Koto who enters in a painted/parallel world (made by his father) searching for his mother.

Watch Kemonozume.
You've probably seen this gif around the Internet.

That's were it's from. Anyways, the show is a damn good show about a pretty fucked up romance. The art style will take time to get used to, but this show is damn good. Watch it.

Personally, I like anime Kaiba. The art style is different (acid trippy at times), and the first two episodes don't really make a lot of sense, but it is one of my favorites somewhat obscure shows.

Watched eveything you suggested already (will start Kaiba after reading today's mangas). Bleach was too short yet again.

Enjoyed Coppelion, found Kyousougiga a bit weird (will probally watch though) and Kemonozume is too much at once for me.

I didn't knew Magi had a manga, i though it was based on a light novel. Will probally read it. Anyonr here reading Hunter x Hunter? I missed it so much <3

By the way, I just started watching Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun/Monthly Girls Nozaki-Kun and it's totally awesome and you all need to check it out now.

The OP is great, reminds me to Cowboy Bebop.

Oh, so I finally got around to watching Akame ga Kill. Pretty good, very bloody, and it seems to have an interesting story. Reading through the comments, I agree with Random 21. There wasn't the need for comedy in that atmosphere. It's a relief to hear there won't be much boob jokes. But overall I like it, and will continue watching it. May have to get used to all the blood, it's been a while since I've watched these kind of anime (shonen, action, fantasy), since I usually prefer Slice of Lifes.

Speaking of Slice of Lifes, Barakamon's a nice new anime I found. My cup of tea, nothing outrageous. It's about calligraphy, so maybe not everyone might be interested.

Okay, after watching a few more episodes, Log Horizon has gone from an action-adventure show about being trapped in a MMO to speculative fiction about being trapped in an MMO. Seriously though, when you start discussing the economic implications of applying the typical MMO crafting system to real life, you've tread into some very interesting territory.

Loli wrote:

It's definitely the best OP of the season thus far for me. It's not had much competition, to be fair, but even still. The show's super funny too, maybe the funniest outside of Space Dandy and Free.

On a separate note, I believe I've found the worst show of the season so far.

I'll save you the trouble of searching, the show's called Momo Kyun Sword

Damn, Corpse Party was freaking brutal. Surprisingly, the anime was more violent than the actual game. The death scenes in the game were some of the most disturbing of any video game, even though they were mostly composed of text boxes with occasional CG pictures. The characters were developed quite well. The ending almost killed me on the inside. Almost. I still found it incredibly entertaining, of course. 8/10, would recommend.

Corpse Party: Book of Shadows had a very…um, captivating beginning. Certainly would arouse your interest (sorry). Was also very violent and brutal, in fact it was more so than the first game. Did a great job building on some of the characters from the previous installment. Go check it out.

Really looking forward to Blood Drive and Dead Patient, but I bet they won't get a North American localization until Autumn. Sucks :(

@Random 21
You do realize that she's based off of Momotaro, a character from Japanese folklore who is born from a giant peach, right? It may be a boob joke, but at least it's a well-thought-out one and a little different from the generic "this girl's got jugs huehuehue". As true as it is that the show looks incredibly fanservice-y just by looking at Google Images, I feel compelled to argue on behalf of that particular joke as fairly…well developed, pun intended. The show itself could still be awful, though.

I do realize that, the show indeed starts out with her being born from a peach, I'd have to be an idiot not to realize that, so you don't need to point out the obvious to me. This joke follows on immediately after that scene, so I get the joke, the point the image is making is the, ahem, size of the splendid peaches. The show is crap, even by boob show standard
