Anime Is My Escape From This Bullshit Called Reality is a catchphrase which has been utilized in quote images about anime and is associated with the weeaboo culture. In late 2010s, the quote was repurposed in ironic memes.

Origin

The exact origin of the quote is unknown. On February 11th, 2015, Amino^[1] user Simon #CMFam reposted the earliest known image collage based on the quote (shown below, left). More similar images appeared on Tumblr, Facebook and other sites in the following years (examples shown below).

Prior to March 4th, 2019, Facebook^[2] page Peejay Kun posted a six-panel collage utilizing the quote (shown below, right). On March 4th, 2019, the collage was reposted in Anime Burst Facebook^[3] group. On June 2nd, 2019, Instagram^[4] user monsieur.egg posted the earliest known meme based on the image, replacing the caption "Reality" in the last panel with "Burger King" (shown below, right). The post received over 3,100 likes in nine months.

Spread

In the following months, monsieur.egg's post was actively circulated online. For example, a June 24th, 2019, repost in the /r/comedyheaven^[5] subreddit received over 46,400 upvotes in six months.

The meme inspired similar parodies posted online on Reddit, Instagram and other platforms. For example, on September 7th, 2019, Redditor^[6] i-may-p-on-u posted a Walter Clemens meme that received over 8,500 upvotes in /r/im14andthisisdeep in six months (shown below, left). On November 2nd, 2019, Redditor^[7] Mrstalin420 posted a meme which received over 3,900 upvotes in /r/okbuddyretard in four months (shown below, right).
