Apple's Newest Emoji refers to a green frog-like character who was originally posted to Reddit's /r/lies subreddit with the caption, "This is apples newest emoji." The original post was shared in 2022. In the following years, the fake Apple emoji spawned memes and fan art on Twitter / X and elsewhere.
Origin
On June 19th, 2022, Redditor[1] kronusjohnson shared a post to /r/lies that read, "This is apples newest emoji," showing a drawing of a green character, gaining over 1,300 upvotes in two years (shown below).
The abovementioned screenshot was taken and reposted by a currently unknown user roughly nine hours after the /r/lies post.[2]
Spread
Posts about Apple's Newest Emoji predominantly surfaced in 2023, evident in an early post shared by X[3] user @bensilly_ on January 5th, 2023. The user shared the original /r/lies screenshot, writing, "this image has taken over my fucking life," gaining over 23,000 likes in a year (shown below).
On January 9th, 2023, X[4] user @Star_isnt_funny tweeted about Apple's Newest Emoji being an Easter Egg in The Emoji Movie, receiving over 2,400 likes in a year (shown below).
In 2024, memes about Apple's Newest Emoji continued.
