Baby Yoda "Nope" is a reaction image and GIF using the trailer for the second season of the Disney+ television series The Mandalorian. The trailer features a scene in which the character The Child, aka Baby Yoda, retreats into its crib to hide from a threat. The clip caught on quickly after the trailer for season two of The Mandalorian dropped on The Mandalorian Twitter page[1], with many relating to the way Baby Yoda hides as if it were saying "nope."

Origin

On September 15th, 2020, the highly anticipated trailer for season two of The Mandalorian went live on The Mandalorian Twitter page. The trailer gained over 7.6 million views in just over a day.

Shortly after the trailer released, Twitter user Olanrewajv commented on the original post with an isolated video from the trailer of Baby Yoda hiding away. The video garnered over 1,000 retweets and 4.8 thousand likes. On the same day, Twitter user munro_mclaren commented a reaction image version of the clip, garnering 166 likes and 9 retweets (shown below).

Spread

Users continued to share the clip in GIF, image, and video formats in the comment section of the trailer. From there it spread across Twitter over the course of the day. On September 15, Twitter user azalben shared a GIF of the clip, attached with the caption 'baby yoda said "nope,"' garnering 180 likes and 70 retweets. On that same day, Twitter user NewbieDM tweeted out, "Baby Yoda saying "nope" and closing up his floating crib is all of us." The tweet got 59 likes and four retweets.

Rotten Tomatoes shared the clip on their Twitter page[2] later that day, followed by other large pages and brand Twitter pages like starwarstuff[3], LightsCameraPod[4], and getFANDOM[5]. Beyond Twitter, E! Online[6], CNET[7], and Nerdist[8] wrote articles about the trailer, making specific mention of Baby Yoda "Nope" and its use as a meme.
