The meme describes the cordial relationship between two cartoon characters, Bob, a Republican and Sally, a Democrat. The meme is frequently mocked, criticized and parodied online. Origin
On December 1st, 2016, Apple Stickers creator Auston Salvana[1] released a sticker pack for iMessage called "Couples In Love Stickers for iMessage" that featured the character that would later be used in the meme (shown below).
On January 6th, 2017, the Republican Facebook [2] group TheSilentMajority published the earliest known usage of the meme. The meme features two characters fro the sticker pack and the text:
This is Bob. He voted for Trump. This is Bob's friend Sally. Sally voted for Clinton. Bob & Sally are still friends, because Bob and Sally are both adults. Be like Bob and Sally.
Within four years, the post received more than 1 million shares, 48,000 reactions and 8,200 comments (shown below).
Spread
Days later, on January 11th, 2017, the Democratic Facebook[3] published an edited version of the "Be Like Bob and Sally" comic that criticizes the Bob character for voting for someone who "mocked the disabled, bulled the media, made racist comments, was accused by many women of sexual assault" and more. The post received more than 33,000 reactions, 16,000 shares and 3,500 comments in less than four years (shown below, left).
Over the next week, numerous blogs published versions of the memes, criticizing its messaging.[4][5][6]
The meme continued to spread online over the next four years (example below, left).[7] On November 1st, 2020, Redditor whiskeyclouds published responses to the meme in the /r/conservative[8] subreddit (shown below, center). The post received more than 3,600 points (68% upvoted) and 745 comments in less than one week.
That day, Twitter [9] user @sentientist shared the meme, resurrecting the debate over the meme. The post received more than 12,000 likes and 8,000 retweets in less than three days (shown below, right). On November 3rd, the Daily Dot [10] published an article about the meme.
