About

Breadbear refers to a photoshopped version of the Five Nights at Freddy's antagonist Nightmare Fredbear imagining what the character would look like as a non-nightmare version, created before the official reveal of the normal Fredbear character model. The Photoshop edit was posted to /r/fivenightsatfreddys in 2015 and inspired memes about how it looked, many comparing it to the Almighty Loaf and deeming it "Breadbear."

Origin

On August 16th, 2015, Redditor ArmedChalko posted an Imgur^[1] link to /r/fivenightsatfreddys,^[2] writing, "Nightmare Fredbear to Normal Fredbear (Photoshop)," linking to a photoshop imagining a version of nightmare Fredbear (shown below, left for comparison) pre-nightmare version (shown below, right). The photoshop is based on a pixelated version of Fredbear that appears in a minigame in FNAF 3 and pre-dates the official reveal of pre-nightmare Fredbear, who first appears in 2018s FNAF: Ultimate Custom Night.^[3] The post gained over 200 upvotes and five awards in seven years.

The photoshop's quality inspired criticism and memes from the /r/fivenightsatfreddys community, particularly for the look of its face. That day, Redditor^[4] BonnieBubblegumBunny commented, "I'm sorry but this is all I could think about looking at it," linking to an image of the Almighty Loaf (shown below, left,) gaining over 50 upvotes in seven years. a now-deleted Redditor commented a photoshop making the character further resemble the Almighty Loaf (shown below, right).

Spread

Breadbear became a running joke on /r/fivenightsatfreddys as users created new photoshops and posts joking about the character. On September 8th, 2015, an /r/fivenightsatfreddys^[5] user requested a Breadbear flair. On September 11th, a now-deleted Redditor^[6] posted a squashed photoshop of Breadbear, gaining over 90 upvotes (shown below).

The character spread to Deviant Art in September where users posted further renditions and photoshops of the character. On September 21st, Deviant Art^[7] user EverythingAnimations posted a 3D model of Breadbear's head, gaining over 10,000 views and 120 favorites in seven years (shown below).

Breadbear appears a number of times in the 2016 FNAF parody fan game Day Shift at Freddy's,^[8] made in RPG Maker MV (shown below, left). On July 12th, 2016, YouTuber 8-BitRyan posted a Let's Play video playing the game, running into Breadbear at the 10:17 mark (shown below, right). The video gained over 1.3 million views in six years. Notable quotes from the game, including "I demand the flesh of virgins," became staples of the meme following its popularity.

On October 16th, YouTuber Dakku uploaded an original animation featuring Breadbear titled "[SFM] The Great Breadbear's Adventure," gaining over 102,000 views in six years (shown below).

Nobody Gives A Shit

On April 1st, 2019, YouTuber TFG1987_ SFM posted an original greenscreen animation where Breadbear claps and says, "Nobody gives a shit," gaining over 2.4 million views in three years (shown below).

On January 2nd, 2021, the same YouTuber posted a new version of the animation where Breadbear claps once and says, "Life is pain," gaining over 2.2 million views in a year (shown below, left). On January 13th, YouTuber Ayieeeks posted a compilation of memes using the original greenscreen over a variety of backgrounds, gaining over 3.2 million views in a year (shown below, right).
