About
"Butter" is a song by K-pop boy band BTS. The song, released in May of 2021, was a record-setting commercial success, breaking streaming records on Spotify and YouTube. In addition to its significant online fandom, the song inspired parodies on YouTube and TikTok.
Origin
On May 21st, 2021, BTS released "Butter," with the video gaining over 446 million views in two months (shown below). [1]
Spread
The song and video broke several records upon release. Within 24 hours, the song broke the record held by the BTS song "Dynamite" to become the fastest video to reach 10 and 100 million views.[3] It also broke the Spotify record for opening day streams with 11 million streams in the first 24 hours.[4] The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for six consecutive weeks after its debut.[5]
Online, "Butter" has inspired numerous parodies on TikTok and YouTube. On June 2nd, 2021, YouTuber SuriNoel posted a cover version of the music video with cats, gaining over 5.4 million views (shown below, left). On June 7th, Arcade Craniacs posted a video in which he acts like the catchiness of the song is a virus, gaining over 1.1 million views (shown below, right).
Ange Momone et David Cover
On June 12th 2021, YouTuber[2] Ange Momone et David posted a video titled " Cover / Reprise ] โ BUTTER โ BTS โ David, Fils de Ange Momone โ AM&." The video depicts a man in a blue shirt poorly singing "Butter." The video hit 45,000 views in 1 month (shown below) and grew popular on TikTok in July of 2021.
