Cat and Cat Cake refers to a series of image macros and photoshopped images of an orange and white cat standing next to a crudely designed cake that was modeled after the cat.

Origin

On February 27th, 2014, Tumblr ^[1] user catseverywhere posted the image with the caption "WTF IS THIS I HATE YOU MOM." The post received more than 327,000 notes in five years (shown below).

Spread

Two years later, on February 10th, 2016, the image was shared on the /r/ExpectationVsReality subreddit. ^[2] The post received more than 3,100 points (94% upvoted) and 50 comments in three years.

On January 10th, 2018, Redditor Vinccool96 posted the image in the /r/photoshopbattles subreddit. The post received more than 1,400 points (96% upvoted) and 20 comments. One of the most popular was posted by Imgur ^[3] HairySwan posted a variation in which the cat's face is stretched to better resemble the cake. The post received more than 2,400 points and 128,000 views (shown below, left).

On January 31st, 2019, Redditor^[4] Tristen_S posted an object-labeled image macro of the image, labeling the original cat as Spotify" and the cake Apple Music, calling the former a pale immitation, similar to Girl Tracing Cat. The post received more than 10,000 points (94% upvoted) and 160 comments in less than two weeks (shown below).
