Chisato and Takina Kicking Each Other's Butt is a scene from the opening of the anime Lycoris Recoil that shows the characters Chisato Nishikigi and Takina Inoue walking and kicking each other's butts with their feet. In mid-2022, the scene was used in redraw and fan art memes across platforms like Twitter.

Origin

On July 2nd, 2022, the anime Lycoris Recoil premiered in Japan,[1] In the opening, Chisato and Takina walk together, and suddenly Chisato kicks Takina's butt. Takina then kicks Chisato's butt back as they continue walking down the road. On July 9th, 2022, the Aniplex official YouTube[2] channel uploaded the opening (marked at 1:16). It received more than 1.3 million views in two weeks (shown below).



This scene is a direct reference to a scene from Rob Reiner's 1986 movie Stand By Me in which two of the main protagonists act in an almost identical manner (seen below).



Spread

The scene gained virality as a redraw reference in the coming days. For example, on July 17th, 2022, Twitter[3] user @takerouya uploaded fan art showing Takina choosing to grab Chisato's butt instead. The tweet received more than 31,500 likes and 5,400 retweets in nine days (shown below, left). On the same day, Twitter[4] user @lysine_slmr uploaded fan art of Lycoris Recoil showing Takina drop-kicking Chisato. The tweet received more than 47,000 likes and 7,800 retweets in a similar timeframe (shown below, left).

The scene was also used to draw fan art from various franchises. For example, on July 16th, 2022, Twitter[5] user @__ani__ uploaded fan art of K-On! characters recreating the scene. The tweet received more than 55,400 likes and 7,400 retweets in 10 days (shown below, left). On July 19th, Twitter[6] user @MaoHanabi1 uploaded fan art of Love Live Nijigasaki characters recreating the scene. The tweet received more than 3,000 likes and 1,000 retweets in one week (shown below, right).

On July 17th, 2022, Twitter[7] user @korichin520 uploaded a re-enactment video of the scene performed in real life. The video received more than 7,100 likes and 1,600 retweets in nine days (shown below).
