Congratulations From Modi refers to an exploitable meme template popular in the country of India. The meme features an oversized photo of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next to a smaller photo of the person being congratulated. The joke originated in late 2021 after images of Modi's face adorning large posters at an award ceremony for winners of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics went viral.
Origin
In August 2021, various Twitter users commented on photos of an award-giving ceremony for Indian winners of the 2020/2021 Tokyo Olympics. On August 9th, 2021, Twitter[1] user and former Indian sportsman @boxervijender posted a photo from the event with a tweet that read, "Everything is PR PR is everything 👍🏽." The post gathered over 24,000 likes in over a year (seen below). Other Twitter users commented on similar images.[2][3]
The earliest known instance of a person using the Congratulations From Modi meme template can be traced to Twitter[4] user @Prateeeex_, who posted an image of Modi and Indian cricketer Jasprit Bumrah On August 6th, 2021 with the caption, "well played bumrah." The post gathered over 3,000 likes in over a year (seen below).
Spread
On August 11th, 2021, Twitter[5] user @dhruv_rathee posted a Congratulations From Modi meme congratulating Lionel Messi on his move to the football club PSG. The post gathered over 27,000 likes in over a year (seen below, left). On August 14th, 2021, Redditor[6] Formal_Ad_8373 posted a Congratulations From Modi meme to r/SamaiRaina, gathering over 600 upvotes in over a year (seen below, right).
On October 1st, 2021, Twitter[7] user Joydas posted a similar meme congratulating someone on their birthday, gathering over 2,000 likes in over a year (seen below, left). On September 16th, 2022, Twitter[8] user @Cryptic_Miind posted a meme congratulating Gautam Adani for becoming the 2nd richest man in the world. The tweet gathered over 6,000 likes in over five months (seen below, right).
