Do We Deserve Destruction is a reaction image and exploitable meme format based on the thumbnail for a YouTube video by New Rockstars showing Dr. Strange (played by actor Benedict Cumberbatch) staring angrily over the text, "Do we deserve destruction?" with an image of a planet in a red circle being destroyed next to his head. As a meme, the reaction image is used, often ironically, to suggest that the human race deserves to be destroyed based on the subject of a post.
The video was uploaded on March 27th, 2022, and the thumbnail began to rise in prominence online in late 2025. Its use is part of a growing trend where YouTube thumbnails are used as reaction images, particularly on sites like TikTok (as stickers) and Instagram Reels, with other examples including the Why Is He Lying? thumbnail and the I'm In! 1.3 Seconds thumbnail.
Origin
On March 27th, 2022, the New Rockstars YouTube[1] channel posted a video titled "DOCTOR STRANGE vs THE ILLUMINATI! Does Our Universe Deserve Destruction? | BQ" in which two people discuss and debate whether or not the MCU's version of the world deserves to be destroyed. The thumbnail shows Dr. Strange staring forward next to an image of the world exploding over the text, "Do we deserve destruction?"
On April 29th, Tumblr[2] user campyvillain posted a compilation of YouTube thumbnails that can be used as reaction images, many of which have been popularized as reaction images since. Included is the "Do We Deserve Destruction" image. The post gained over 15,000 Notes in four years.
Spread
The Do We Deserve Destruction thumbnail spread as a reaction image over the following years, also becoming the subject of edits.[3] The meme was further popularized in late 2025 through 2026.
On October 5th, 2025, Tenor[4] user Ablestrujonk uploaded the reaction image. On October 26th, Tenor[5] user mysmic posted an edit that reads, "Do we deserve repairing?"
On February 25th, 2026, Giphy[6] user Kalos Legacy posted a recreation of the meme that references Pokemon, garnering over 3.1 million views in five months.
On April 19th, TikToker[7] @boleswav posted a Kpop Demon Hunters brainrot edit that implements the original reaction image that gained over 565,000 views in three months.
