What Happened to Shame? is a New Rockstars thumbnail reaction image of Peter Parker (portrayed by Tom Holland) captioned with the phrase. An edited version of a YouTube video by New Rockstars, the thumbnail achieved virality in the summer of 2022 and has been mainly used to react to hornyposting on social media.

Origin

On March 19th, 2022, the YouTube^[1] channel New Rockstars released a video titled "SPIDER-MAN NO WAY HOME Breakdown! 170+ MORE Easter Eggs Found!" in which they reviewed easter eggs found in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home. The thumbnail of the video depicts Peter Parker / Spider-Man (Tom Holland) while a red circle and an arrow highlight an Iron Man poster standing on the floor in the background. The video received over 4.5 million views in one year.

On May 1st, 2022, following the virality of the What Was He Cooking meme spawned by the thumbnail from another New Rockstars' video, Tumblr^[2] user campyvillain made a compilation post for thumbnails from the channel. On May 22nd, X^[3] user @Dom_2k posted an edited version of the easter eggs video, with the image in the red circle replaced with Tony Stark / Iron Man, and the thumbnail now captioned, "What happened to shame?" (image and tweet shown below, left and right). The author of the edit is currently unknown.

Spread

The image saw further spread on X through the summer months of 2023, mainly being used as a reaction to shameful behavior online, including simping and hornyposting. Notably, on August 25th, 2022, the Instagram^[4] page footballsoccermeme used the image as a reaction to an image of footballer Erling Haaland presumably diving in a charity match. The post (shown below, left) received over 2,600 likes in one year.

On August 31st, 2022, X^[5] user @1Sheepp used the image to reply to a post by streamer ohnePixel in which they pretended to have a detailed tattoo of streamer Pokimane. The reply (shown below, right) received 40 reposts and over 9,500 likes in one year.

The image maintained its popularity as a reaction through the second half of 2022 and in 2023, with the caption also gaining independent virality. On September 21st, 2022, X^[6] user @worrski_ included the image in a thread of New Rockstars Thumbnail Reactions, with the first tweet in the thread gaining over 17,100 reposts and 127,700 likes in one year (shown below, left).

On April 17th, 2023, X^[7] user @ComicLoverMari used the image to react to a post by @NewRockstars in which the account shared a fan-made poster for a movie adaptation of Super Smash Bros. The post received over 120 reposts and 3,200 likes in four months (shown below, right).
