About
Don't Worry. I Promise You That I Won't, also known as Promise Me That You Won't Play Games or Guys Play Games, refers to a 2018 webcomic by the artist Obiaris where a man promises a woman that he won't "play games" with her, then looks menacingly with yellow eyes at the reader as he walks out the door with her, implying he's planning on being unfaithful to her. The comic became the subject of photoshops and image macros in the years after it was posted, with the woman's caption often changed to alter the context.
Origin
On October 26th, 2018, webcomic artist Obiaris posted a comic to Twitter[1] where a man picks up a woman to go to the movies. She stops him, saying she's unsure because "guys always play games." She then asks him to promise he won't play games with her, which he does. They start to walk out the door. In the final panel, he looks forward as if at the reader with snake-like yellow eyes and an evil grin, revealing his lie (shown below). The post gained over 2,300 likes and 1,000 retweets in three years. The comic is also available on his website.[4]
The yellow-eyed grin is a reference to a scene in Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video, where he walks out the door with a girl then turns to the camera with yellow eyes and a menacing smile (shown below).
Spread
The comic became the subject of memes as early as 2019, most commonly a cropped version of just the Black man's evil grin in the fourth panel.[9] On May 13th, 2021, Twitter[8] user @_ezeokolorie posted a cropped image of just the man's evil look to Twitter, captioned with the joke, "“Not followed by anyone you’re following,'" gaining over 179,000 likes and 23,000 retweets in eight months (shown below).
In 2021 the comic became a popular subject of photoshops on /r/okbuddyretard. On May 15th, Redditor AB365_MegaRaichu posted an edited version of the final four panels of the comic to /r/okbuddyretard[6] photoshopped to show the woman saying, "promise me that you won't go poopoo in the middle of Walmart," gaining over 25,000 upvotes in eight months (shown below, left). On May 16th, Redditor officerRaven posted a photoshopped version to /r/okbuddyretard[5] about the Sandy Cheeks cock vore meme, gaining over 2,700 upvotes in eight months (shown below, right).
