Overview

Mexican Mayor Alejandro Arcos Beheading, also known as Chilpancingo Mayor Decapitation, refers to viral gore images and videos showing the decapitated head of Mexican Mayor Alejandro Arcos, who was murdered (presumedly by cartel members) in early October 2024 less than a week after taking office in Chilpancingo, Guerrero. Shock photos and videos initially circulated on the messaging app WhatsApp depicting a severed head on top of a pickup truck, appearing to be that of Arcos. On October 6th, 2024, Mexican Mayor Alejandro Arcos Catalán was attacked and beheaded days after taking office in Chilpancingo, Guerrero.^[1] Local authorities found the severed head of Arcos lying atop a white vehicle while his body lay slumped inside on the east side of Chilpancingo. According to reports, his body was left in the front passenger seat (seen below).^[2]

The news about Arcos' brutal murder was widely covered on October 7th, 2024, as the YouTube^[3] news channel @milenio uploaded a video about the crime (seen below), amassing over 145,000 views and 1,500 likes in a day.

As of October 8th, 2024, authorities have not released details of the ongoing investigation or suspects involved in the murder. However, according to BBC,^[4] "Guerrero is one of the worst-affected states for drug violence and drug cartels have murdered dozens of politicians across the country."

Users who shared the gore images of Arco's severed head were heavily criticized online by some and the case also became the subject of memes as people shared their reactions after looking at the murder photographs.

For example, on October 7th, 2024, X^[7] user @DocStrangelove2 posted the SpongeBob Fish Looking Into Toilet meme, captioning it, "Oh, that's a photo of a politician's decapitated head just unfiltered on the timeline." The post (seen below) amassed over 62,000 likes and 2,300 reposts in a day.
