Hunter Schaffner and Holden Goyette Mirror Incident or the Mirror Incident Video is a fake gore video filmed by a student (Holden Goyette) showing another student (Hunter Schaffner) take a school mirror off the wall and drop it in a stall too hard, supposedly causing it to splinter and cut Hunter to pieces. In December 2022, a TikToker shared a series of images purportedly taken from the video, describing the details in the post, inspiring viewers to look it up and spread it further over the following weeks. Upon attempting to find it, many then learned that it was merely a hoax.

Origin

On December 19th, 2022, TikToker^[1] @holdne posted a series of four images (shown below) as a TikTok slideshow, the first three showing a kid (supposedly Hunter Schaffner) holding a school bathroom mirror. The fourth image is heavily censored and shows the mirror on the floor, red pixels meant to look like blood and part of Hunter's face with his eyes closed. The description claims that the screenshots are taken from a gore video filmed in 2022 where a boy (Hunter Schaffner) takes a school mirror off the wall, drops it too hard into a bathroom stall and it shatters, "cutting him into little tiny pieces." The video gained over 36.8 million views in four months.

this story is heartbreaking. i’m 2022 roughly april two boys (hunter schaffner) and (holden goyette) decided to remove the mirror from the bathroom of there school, holden was filming the whole things as hunter decided to put it in the bathroom stall, as holden watched hunter dropped the mirror too hard causing it to shatter and send tiny splinters of glass all through hunters body completely cutting him into little tiny pieces, no arrests were made but holden was charged with disturbing the property. I warn you the footage is graphic.

Spread

The video gained viral spread over the following weeks, causing a spike in search interest through January 2023 as viewers tried to search for the "mirror incident video" only to discover there is no video of the purported event online and that it's likely fake. On December 20th, 2022, Twitter^[2] user @skelopit posted, "Why did I search for hunter schaffner mirror video for what left like years only to find out it was a joke and there is no video," garnering over 180 likes in four months. On December 30th, TikToker^[3] @vietnamgiit_jay posted a video scrolling through their FYP, showing the mirror incident upload first, garnering over 700,000 views in four months (shown below, left).

On January 17th, 2023, Redditor vsbobclear made a post to /r/RBI^[4] asking about the video, garnering over 150 upvotes in three months. On February 22nd, TikToker^[5] @wormonastirng posted a video referring to it, garnering over 280,000 views in two months (shown below, right).
