About

Fuckass or Fuck Ass is a slang term used as a general expletive and to express distaste or hatred for someone or something, with the term essentially meaning "despicable," "annoying" or "stupid." While the exact origins of the term are unclear, it was used as early as 2001 in the film Donnie Darko and gained viral spread online over the following years, becoming increasingly popularized in the 2020s as a catchall insult towards anything a person doesn't like. In 2023, the related term "fuck ass bob" went viral in reference to perceivably bad bob haircuts, inspiring memes.

Origin

The exact origins of "fuckass" are unknown, with one of the first prominent examples appearing in the 2001 film Donnie Darko. In the scene, Donnie (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) and his sister are arguing at the dinner table. Donnie calls his sister a fuckass and she tells him to "suck a fuck" (shown below). The term was first defined on Urban Dictionary^[1] in 2005 as, "Means someone who is arrogant annoying, an asshole just a complete idiot," mentioning that it is used in Donnie Darko.

Spread

The term gained further spread online throughout the 2010s. Purportedly, the term appeared four times in the webcomic Homestuck throughout the 2010s.^[2] On September 25th, 2015, Tumblr^[3] user textpostsandcats made a text post using the phrase that gained over 145,000 notes in nine years (shown below).

Fuck Ass Bob

"Fuck Ass Bob," sometimes shortened to the acronym FAB, is a phrase used to negatively reference people with blunt, neck-length, middle-parted and perceivedly ugly bob haircuts. The earliest known use of the phrase is a viral video from as early as 2021 where a woman in a classroom yells at another woman and tells her she has a "fuck ass bob" (shown below).^[4]

The phrase was further popularized around August 2023 in reference to a scene in Euphoria where Kat, who has a bob, suggests the principal knew it was her in a leaked sex tape due to her weight. One viewer, since-suspended X user @ungodlyrowe, posted a screenshot of the scene online, adding the caption, "I hate her. 'Is it because I'm fat Mr. Hayes' no it's because you the only one with that fuck ass bob."

On August 17th, 2023, TikToker^[5] @pretendingtobehot posted a video sharing the image and discussing the phrase in general, falsely claiming it's the origin, garnering over 1.2 million likes in five months (shown below).

The post inspired others to use the term "fuck ass bob" in reference to people with perceivably bad bob haircuts over the following months (examples shown below).

Continued Spread

The term continued to see general use as an insult and general expletive in 2023 and 2024. On September 30th, 2023, X^[6] user @88hdee posted a photo of their cat sitting in a loaf-like shape, writing, "she always in this fuckass loaf," garnering over 30,000 likes in four months (shown below, left). On January 15th, 2024, X^[7] user @grovymango posted, "Can't go on a mental health walk in this fuckass winter weather," garnering over 100,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).
