Gay Wrath Month or LGBT Wrath Month is a satirical month often referenced in memes that claims July, the month following Gay Pride Month, is "Gay Wrath Month." The memetic celebration makes reference to the Seven Deadly Sins, two of which are "pride" and "wrath." It was first mentioned online in 2017 and has sometimes been described as taking place in June, although is more commonly said to occur in July. In June and July of every year since, gay wrath inspires artwork and memes depicting wrathful members and symbols of the LGBTQ+ community.

Origin

Jokes about June or July being gay or LGBTQ+ wrath month first started appearing online in June 2017. One of the earliest known posts referencing gay wrath month was posted by Twitter^[1] user @ssbcpunk on June 1st, 2017, writing, "Happy Gay Wrath Month." However, the meme did not become largely popularized until 2018. On July 1st, 2017, now-deleted Twitter user @rCharlotteSmith posted, "pride month is over, time for LGBT wrath month," which was then reposted by Tumblr^[2] user laurathechef84 on May 24th, 2018, garnering over 74,100 notes in five years (shown below).

That year, gay wrath became a prominent meme on sites like Twitter and Tumblr, inspiring comedic posts about the month and artwork referencing it. On June 30th, 2018, Twitter^[3] user @SouthernHomo made a post referencing it, garnering over 70,000 likes in five years (shown below, left). On July 13th, Twitter^[4] user @KateHeppell then posted, "How’s everyone enjoying Gay Wrath Month?" garnering over 9,300 likes in five years (shown below, right). The meme was notably reported on by the Washington Post^[5] and Junkee^[6] that month.

Spread

The memetic month continued to spread over the following years, becoming increasingly more prevalent every June and July (coinciding with Pride Month). On June 1st, 2020, Twitter^[7] user @doeantlers posted, "Happy gay wrath month," sharing artwork of gay wrath unicorns, garnering over 3,500 likes in three years. On June 4th, the same Twitter^[8] user posted a similar piece of artwork that gained over 47,000 likes in three years (shown below).

At the end of June 2023, people began sharing gay wrath memes again. On June 30th, 2023, Twitter^[9] user @Milheril posted, "Today, last day of Gay Pride. Tomorrow, first day of Gay Wrath," garnering over 48,800 likes in four days. On the same day, Twitter^[10] user @AeroViro posted a piece of gay wrath artwork that gained over 60,700 likes in the same span of time (shown below, left). On July 1st, Twitter^[11] user @SorenLover_666 posted a meme that gained over 3,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).
