Genetically Engineered Catgirls refers to the creation of real-life anthropomorphic Nekomimi anime catgirls using modern genetic engineering techniques.
Origin
On April 20th, 2008, AnimeForum[8] member Amray submitted a thread titled "If Catgirls Existed," which posited the question "If catgirls existed in the world would you get one?" In the thread, other users commented that catgirls would have to be created by genetic mutation or genetic engineering.
Spread
On January 3rd, 2011, YouTuber DiosGX uploaded a video titled "Real Life Catgirls (Genetic Manipulation)," in which he mused about using a bacteriophage to create catgirls in real-life (shown below).
On April 6th, 2012, a Facebook[4] page titled "Genetically Engineered Catgirls For Domestic Ownership" was created. On December 21st, 2013, the domain catgirlcare.org[5] was created for the website, which features a logo from the Facebook page along with a "Guide to Proper Cat-Girl Care" (shown below).
On December 29th, YouTuber Loliconics uploaded a video titled "Genetically Engineered Catgirls for Domestic Ownership" (shown below). That day, the video reached the frontpage of the /r/anime[6] subreddit.
On January 1st, 2018, the website Gecfdo.com was launched with the mission of sponsoring "genetic engineered research" to create "Catgirls in the 21st century." The site contains a donation widget and several image macros captioned with variations of the "phrasal template": "Every dollar spent on X is a dollar not spent on genetically engineered Catgirls for domestic ownership" (shown below).
On February 4th, Redditor MemesAre_Trash submitted a photoshopped BBC News article titled "'Genetically Engineered Catgirls are Possible,' Scientists says, "but we lack funding" to /r/Animemes (shown below, left).[7] On February 12th, Redditor MemeKrabs uploaded a fake Elon Musk tweet proclaiming "we can finally move on to genetically engineered cat girls" (shown below, right). Within 48 hours, the post gained over 27,000 points (94% upvoted) and 320 comments on /r/dankmemes.[3]
