About

Nyan~ Neko Sugar Girls is a fan-created anime (aka "Fanime") created by the YouTube user SoapOpera46. The series grew in infamy for its poor art style, audio, and bad voice acting, leading some to believe the series was an intentionally poorly-made parody, similar to My Immortal and Tails Gets Trolled.

History

On April 9th, 2010, YouTuber SoapOpera46 posted the first episode of their fanime, "Nyan~ Neko Sugar Girls." The first episode has gained over 1.5 million views in nearly ten years.

In the series, Raku-chan, a cat-girl seems to have a crush on Hitoshi-san, who may possibly be gay. Raku-chan lives with Koneko-chan, apparently. In the first episode, the main plot is Raku-chan meeting Hitoshi-san. The series then escalates with Hitoshi getting kidnapped and developing homosexual feelings for his kidnapper. The series ran for ten episodes, with its final episode airing December 24th, 2012 (full series shown below).

Online Presence

The series inspired a bevy of fan tributes, including fandubs, parodies, autotuned versions, and commentaries on YouTube. YouTuber Comradeiota posted a "Let's Watch" series about Nyan Neko Sugar Girls, gaining tens of thousands of views per episode (shown below, left). User SkyTheSharkicorn posted a reanimation of the intro in 2018, gaining over 457,000 views (shown below, right).

The series also inspired a large amount of fan art on DeviantArt (examples shown below). The series has been documented on TV Tropes[1] and a Fandom Wiki.[2]
