Giant Foam MAGA Hat

About

Giant Foam MAGA Hat or Huge Foam MAGA Hat refers to a giant, red Make America Great Again hat that's made out of foam and worn by Donald Trump supporters both as a gag and earnestly. Videos of Trump supporters wearing the hats in interviews and confrontations surfaced on Twitter in mid-2019. In 2022 when the FBI Raid On Mar-a-Lago happened, a blonde woman outside the scene was questioned by reporters while wearing the foam hat, inspiring reactions and memes. Creators specifically exploited the hat's product image, sourced from Etsy.

Origin

The Huge Foam MAGA Hat was created by the web store giantmagahat.com[11] on April 17th, 2019. Its product first became known online in June 2019, when on June 23rd, 2019, Twitter[9] user KingfaceF1 was wearing a giant foam MAGA hat in a video he posted that tagged the since-deleted Twitter account of the web store. In the video, he's arguing with someone, asking them, "Tell me what the word 'racist' is." Over the course of three years, the tweet received roughly 13,400 likes and the video earned roughly 326,400 views (shown below).

Spread

The giant MAGA hat became more well-known after North Carolina rapper Bryson Grey wore it at a Fayetteville rally in 2019 and was interviewed by local CBS 17 news while wearing it. Grey was quoted saying, "I have a lot of friends who tell me that… I shouldn't wear the MAGA hat, so I bought the biggest MAGA hat." The news segment was uploaded to YouTube by the channel Trump War Room on September 9th, 2019, earning roughly 11,600 views over the course of three years (shown below).

On September 17th, 2019, web store Trump Rack[1] posted on their Facebook [2] page the video of Grey being interviewed and later launched its own giant foam MAGA hat as a competitor. On October 8th, 2019, Trump Rack uploaded a YouTube video on how to assemble the foam hat, earning over 800 views in three years (shown below, left). In later years, Grey would upload pro-MAGA rap songs, like one music video he uploaded to YouTube on August 23rd, 2020, wherein, he's wearing a giant foam MAGA cowboy hat. The video received roughly 1.4 million views and 108,000 likes in two years (shown below, right).

In 2019 and 2020, reviews were posted on the Trump Rack website from buyers that shared photographs of themselves enjoying the product. For Instance, Trump Rack shared a Facebook[3] post on April 10th, 2020, that showed a husband and wife wearing their giant foam MAGA hats (shown below, left). On July 30th, 2020, the company shared another customer photo on Facebook[4] (shown below, right).

Others on Twitter[6][7] shared images of their friends or family wearing giant foam MAGA hats in 2020.

By 2021, shops on Etsy[8] and elsewhere started selling their own giant foam MAGA hats. On August 24th, 2021, Twitter[10] user and MeidasTouch advisor Adam Parkhomenko posted a video interview with a man wearing a giant foam MAGA hat, earning roughly 5,800 likes and 845,400 views in one year (shown below).

The video received multiple, viral quote retweets that reacted to the hat and the woman. For instance, on August 10th, 2022, Twitter[13] user substitutedaddy posted a QT that simply stated, "THE HAT CANT BE REAL," earning roughly 90,400 likes in one day (shown below, top). The meme received roughly 4,800 likes in less than a day (shown below, left). Later on August 10th, Twitter[16] user JUNIPER replaced the text to read, "goblin mode," earning roughly 2,300 likes in the same time period (shown below, right).
