Girl Running From a Peacock refers to a photograph of a young girl running in terror from a peacock. The photograph became the subject of photoshops and image labeling after finding popularity on Reddit, with the most popular variant depicting the same girl running from an orangutan on a tricycle.
Origin
On June 26th, 2016, bwaxse posted an image of their daughter running away from a peacock with its plume extended to /r/pics[1] along with the caption, "Our trip to the petting zoo did not go as planned" (shown below). The post gained over 56,000 upvotes and a Reddit Gold award in 4 years
Spread
On June 26th, 2016, the image was reuploaded to /r/photoshopbattles[2] garnering over 5,700 upvotes and 360 comments in 4 years (examples of top upvoted results shown below).
On July 1st, an anonymous user uploaded a collection of photoshops of the image to Imgur[3] garnering over 58,000 views in 4 years.
Girl Running From Orangutan
On May 28th, 2007, photographer Andrew Villasis posted a series of photographs depicting animals at the Phuket Zoo to Flickr.[4] Among those photographs is one depicting an orangutan riding a tricycle. On July 16th, 2016, Eror404 uploaded a version of the girl running from a peacock image featuring this orangutan in the place of the peacock and text in the lower-right corner reading "Justice 4 Harambe" to Imgur,[5] garnering over 3,600 upvotes in over 4 years (shown below).
Between July 16th and the 18th, Shitheadsteve uploaded an image macro featuring the image of the orangutan chasing the girl along with the top text, "When Pokemon Go leads you to the wrong part of the zoo" but has since been deleted (shown below, left). The image was reuploaded to Imgur[6] on July 18th, garnering over 3,700 views in 4 years. On March 20th, DenisFRS uploaded a high quality version of the image to /r/MemeTemplatesOfficial.[7] On March 21st, 2019, meme creator trashcanpaul posted a labeled version of the image to his Instagram[8] page, garnering over 34,000 likes in 21 months (shown below, right).
On November 17th, thisGermanboi uploaded a re-labeled version of the meme to /r/meme,[9] garnering over 9,900 upvotes in a year (shown below, left). On September 7th, 2020, goldninjaI uploaded another labeled version of the image to /r/pcmasterrace,[10] garnering over 8,200 upvotes in 3 months (shown below, right).
