About

Hey SpongeBob refers to a scene from a 2002 episode of SpongeBob SquarePants where Sandy walks into SpongeBob's house and says "hey SpongeBob" while giving Patrick a piggyback as he laughs hysterically. Patrick then screams with laughter. The short scene became the subject of edits in late 2021 as people replaced Patrick's scream with other sound effects and voices for comedic effect, often changing the color of his body as well.

Origin

On November 12th, 2002, season three, episode 56b of SpongeBob SquarePants, titled "I Had an Accident,"[1] aired in North America. In the episode, Sandy walks into SpongeBob's house with Patrick riding on her back. He's laughing hysterically the whole time. Sandy enters and says, "hey SpongeBob," and Patrick's laughter increases to a scream (shown below).
