Part of a series on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. [View Related Entries]

About

HK-47 is an assassin droid who accompanies the main protagonist Revan in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, as well as the main protagonist Meetra Surik in the sequel. While he is well-known in the fanbase, he is often equally recognized and loved outside of the fanbase for his misanthropic quotes upon encounter.[1]

Origin

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (or Star Wars K.O.T.O.R.) was released on Xbox on July 15th, 2003 for North America. In it, the game allows up to 2 companions to travel alongside you in your quest [2], one of which being HK himself as a potential party member. He is recruited via purchase from Yuka Laka, the Ithorian proprietor of the droid shop in Anchorhead on Tatooine.[3]

While not particularly stand-out in terms of utility and Gameplay, most of HK-47's praise and appreciation come from his dialogue options and speech patterns, which portray him as a ruthless killing machine with an excessive sarcastic tone, similar to the likes of GLaDOS in the Portal video game series.

Spread

Some of the earliest videos found of him are compilations of his most noteworthy statements, queries, and commentaries. These videos date back as far as 2008 on Youtube. A video titled, "The Best of HK-47 (KOTOR I)" was uploaded to Youtube on May 6th, 2008, and has received over 1.1 Million views since its release. Another video, titled "KotOR 2 HK-47: How to Kill Jedi" was uploaded to Youtube on May 25th, 2008 and has received over 1.9 Million views.

MEATBAG

HK-47 is often portrayed in memes using his signature catchphrase: "Meatbag." Meatbag is a common word he uses to describe organic lifeforms -- whether or not it is seen as an insult depends on the player's interpretation, as well as their in-game dialogue options. The term "Meatbag" is said to have originated with the robot Bender of Futurama fame, but was more recognized by HK-47's usage years later. [4]

Sentence Prefixes

HK-47 is often remembered by his robotic speech patterns. Notably, he has a unique speech trait to that of other party members, always starting off dialogue with a one-word conditional before speaking, such as "Acknowledgement", "Statement" or "Query."[1]

Quote/Screencap responses

Most commonly, HK will be posted with various in-game screencaps of his quotations. Oftentimes, it is to create a ridiculous punchline, or as a sardonic retort to hypothetical statements.
