I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT! refers to a viral post made by former President Donald Trump on his Truth Social account early on September 15th, 2024. The post came days after the American pop star formally endorsed Vice President and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris for President and after Trump's campaign repeatedly used Taylor Swift imagery in its campaign posts and merchandise. Many internet users linked the September 2024 Trump Golf Course Shooting Attempt to the tweet, joking about how the post may have inspired the assassination attempt. Other internet users posted parodies of the tweet, editing it to make it appear as though Trump proclaimed his hatred for other popular things, including the baby hippo Moo-Deng.

Origin

On the morning of September 15th, 2024, Donald Trump made a post to his Truth Social^[1] account that read, "I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!" in all caps. The post gathered over 1,000 likes and 425 "ReTruths" in an hour.

Precursor

On August 18th, 2024, Donald Trump posted a series of images, including AI-generated images, to his Truth Social^[2] account showing blonde women wearing shirts that read "Swifties for Trump" and an AI-generated image of Taylor Swift dressed as Uncle Sam. The caption on the post read, "I accept!"

On September 10th, 2024, Taylor Swift then announced on her Instagram^[3] that she was officially endorsing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. Swift made a point of noting Trump's AI-generated post of her, saying that it "conjured up [her] fears around AI."

Spread

Donald Trump's Truth Social post announcing that he hates Taylor Swift quickly garnered interest online in mid-September 2024. For example, it was reposted to the subreddits /r/TaylorSwift^[7] and /r/Music^[8] on September 15th, 2024, where it gathered over 40,000 upvotes in a day.

Various Truth Social users also reacted to the post negatively, criticizing Trump in the replies of his post for mentioning Swift at all and possibly harming his campaign (examples shown below).

Other internet users reacted to the news about Trump's anti-Swift post, joking that his outburst may have cost him the election considering Taylor Swift's popularity amongst white female voters.

Also on September 15th, X^[5] user @zachsilberberg posted an edited version of Trump's tweet, now making it appear as though he wrote, "I HATE MOO DENG!" The post, which referenced the then-viral baby hippo Moo-Deng, gathered over 46,000 likes in a day.

Later on September 15th, 2024, X^[6] user @ChrisCJackson posted an entirely blue electoral map, implying that Harris would sweep the elections after Trump's post, gathering over 27,000 likes in a day.

Connection to the Second Trump Assassination Attempt

Various internet users posted jokes about how the second Trump assassination attempt took place mere hours after he tweeted about hating Taylor Swift when a man shot at him while he was golfing in Florida on September 15th, 2024.

For example, that same day, X^[9] user @maiamindel posted the two news headlines and gathered over 190,000 likes in a day.

Some conservative X users attempted to link Ryan Routh to Taylor Swift, as seen in a screenshot posted by Dom Lucre. However, this screenshot is unverified and there is no evidence that Routh ever mentioned Taylor Swift on his social media.^[10]
