I Know That Took Restraint, also known as Thanks for Not Saying X in Front of My Parents, is an exploitable meme and phrasal template where an imagined girlfriend, being the character Sakuya Shirase from iDOLM@STER Shiny Colors, is sitting in a car and thanking her partner for not saying various internet slang terms like based, cringe or poggers, among others, on a date or in front of her parents. The original meme was shared on either iFunny or Reddit in mid-2021.

On July 9th, 2021, Tumblr[10] user roconize posted two images that showed Sakuya Shirase from iDOLM@STER Shiny Colors in a car happily saying, "Thanks for not correcting my dad at dinner when he confused geckos and iguanas. I know it took restraint." The post received over 15,700 notes in three years (shown below).

On August 24th, 2021, a Redditor (since-deleted) posted a meme to /r/teenagers[1] that showed Sakuya Shirase from iDOLM@STER Shiny Colors in a car happily telling them, "Thanks for not saying 'based', 'cringe' and 'poggers' in front of my parents. I know that took a lot of restraint." Over the course of nine months, the meme received roughly 19,900 upvotes (shown below).
However, a day prior, on August 23rd, 2021, iFunnier[8] AniMexican reposted a voiceover video meme created by an unknown user named lolijesus, earning over 85 smiles in nine months (shown below).
On August 25th, 2021, an anon on 4chan posted a new iteration to /b/,[2] referencing Uohhhhhhhhh! π (shown below, left). The same meme was shared by iFunnier[9] Frisk on August 25th, earning over 600 smiles in nine months (Frisk is the likely creator of the meme). On August 27th, 2021, Redditor fazeflak imagined who was sitting in the passenger seat of the car to be Pink Guy in a meme posted to /r/Memes [3] that earned roughly 32,900 upvotes in nine months (shown below, right).
On September 10th, 2021, Redditor Scruffpants posted a version to /r/dndmemes[4] that showed thankfulness over not saying, "I have darkvision," in reference to the roleplaying game Dungeons and Dragons. Over the course of eight months, the meme received roughly 3,000 upvotes (shown below, left). On September 28th, 2021, the aforementioned iteration was shared to Tumblr [5] by the user lexingt0n. A thread ensued along with Tumblr user catgirlforeskin, wherein, another drawing was made to show an imagined passenger, being the iDOLM@STER character Mamimi Tanaka, looking out the window, earning roughly 14,200 notes in eight months (shown below, right).
More iterations appeared on Twitter [6] and Funnyjunk [7] going into 2022. More voiceover videos emerged using the template on YouTube. For instance, on November 6th, 2021, YouTuber clairetta posted a video that earned roughly 1,000 views in seven months (shown below).
