I Was Told Steph Curry Wasn't A Good Shooter refers to a 2019 tweet by user @killakow about NBA player Steph Curry that became an axiom on Twitter to describe tweets in which a person asserts an obvious, widely regarded opinion by boasting to an unseen strawman who denies the opinion. Over the course of the following years, the saying and variations of it were frequently referenced online.

Origin

On June 10th, 2019, Twitter user @killakow^[1] tweeted, "there’s always someone on twitter arguing with no one. saying stuff like 'but I was told steph curry wasn’t a good shooter.'" The tweet gained over 450 retweets and 2,300 likes in roughly two and a half years (shown below). For context, Steph Curry is widely regarded as one of the greatest shooters in basketball history, and owns multiple NBA shooting records.^[2]

Spread

Despite the relatively modest spread of killakow's tweet, it proved memorable, as Twitter users recalled it upon encountering situations described by the tweet over two years after it was first posted. For example, on July 28th, 2021, Twitter user @electricsnuff^[3] posted a reference to the tweet in response to a user writing, "If your favorite analyst ranks CeeDee outside the top 20 WRs this year, he’s telling on himself" (shown below, left). On May 24th, user @Brandonnagy^[4] posted it in response to a Toronto Blue Jays tweet (shown below, right).

The phrase has also seen usage outside of sports-related contexts. On May 26th, 2021, user @Mikelennial^[5] posted it in response to a take about Olivia Rodrigo (shown below, left). On February 14th, 2022, Twitter user @ryrob97^[6] posted a reference to the tweet in response to Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney saying she was "told" she "didn't have a face for TV" (shown below, right).
