Ideal Floorplan or Future Home Floor Plan is an exploitable image macro meme featuring the architectural layout for an oddly shaped apartment or house. The floor plan depicts a small bed, bath, kitchen and sometimes a lounge area, leaving a large swath of floor space unmarked. The meme is then typically edited to assign a role to the unmarked area, often to depict it as storage for a personal hobby or quirk for humorous effect by labeling it with text.

Origin

The earliest known version of the "Ideal Floorplan" image was posted to Imgrum on August 28th, 2016, under the tags "favorite song" and "Ableton live" (accessed via TinEye) (seen below, left).^[1] Another early version of the meme changed the word "Studio" to read "Gun Room," and was posted to Imgrum on September 19th, 2016, under the tag "policelivesmatter."^[2] It was reposted to the Tumblr page BulletButton on October 25th, receiving an unknown number of notes.^[3]

Spread

Other variations of the meme made appearances on image-hosting sites like Goldpix^[4] and sillycool^[5] in subsequent months, continuing to spread over the following years. On May 21st, 2017, Redditor^[6] /u/dog111000 posted a version of the meme to /r/dankmemes, gathering over 500 upvotes in five years (seen below, left). On June 22nd, 2017, Redditor^[7] /u/inaptitude posted a version of the meme to /r/vinyl, gathering over 1,700 upvotes in five years (seen below, right).

On January 16th, 2019, Tumblr^[8] page the-minecraft-funnies uploaded a version of the meme, gathering over 32,000 notes in three years (seen below, left). On October 15th, 2020, a version of the meme was posted to /r/funny by Redditor /u/Cletus_San,^[9] where it gathered over 12,000 upvotes in over two years (seen below, right). These uploads are the earliest known viral iterations of the meme.
