About
If I'm To Have A Symbol, It Shall Be One I Respect. is a scene from the Watchmen graphical novel in which Dr. Manhattan burns a symbol representing a hydrogen atom onto his forehead. It was turned into an exploitable meme with the symbol being replaced by other symbols and logos.
Origin
In Chapter IV of Watchmen, a scene that details the origin of the Dr. Manhattan depicts the character as designing his superhero persona, when offered a superhero costume and helmet, Dr Manhattan rejects a helmet offered by an assistant that features a generic atom symbol designed for commercial purposes, and instead uses one of his choice, the scientific hydrogen atom symbol, in which the character engraves into his forehead.
Spread
Edits of the scene can be found as far back as 2009, such as the image below which gives Dr. Manhattan blue hair.[1]
In 2012, an edit of the comic using the meme Newfags Can't Triforce appeared, which has seen wide use on 4chan boards.
