Kirby Falls or Kirby Falls Into The Abyss refers to a series of video edits based on a scene where Kirby falls off a cliff into a dark pit from a 2001 episode of the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! anime. Typically used as an exploitable format, screams are often added to the scene with captions or other elements overlaid on top. The original edit was posted to YouTube in April 2019 and gained viral spread, inspiring variations over the following years.

Origin

On October 5th, 2001, the first episode of Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, titled "Kirby Comes to Cappy Town,"[1] aired on Japanese television, airing on North American television on September 14th, 2002. In the episode, King Dedede hits Kirby with a mallet, sending him falling into a pit (shown below).



On April 21st, 2019, YouTuber[2] Ricardo7590 posted an edit of the scene where Kirby screams in an exaggerated way while falling down the abyss, gaining over 837,000 views in three years (shown below).

On April 28th, 2019, YouTuber[3] Ricardo7590 uploaded a new version of the clip with a Chilean scream edited over it, seemingly from an account @sadgirl.x_x although now deleted, gaining over 126,000 views in three years. On October 18th, a YouTuber[4] reuploaded the original meme, gaining over 685,000 views in a similar span of time. On July 5th, 2020, Tenor[5] user yeetyoshi posted a GIF of the scene captioned "kirby died f" (shown below). On August 2nd, Redditor I-like-oranges75 posted a greenscreen version of the clip to /r/Kirby,[6] gaining over 50 upvotes in two years.

On June 15th, 2021, YouTuber[7] PizzaDude posted an edit using the scene combining it with footage from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, gaining over 141,000 views in 11 months (shown below, left). On July 10th, YouTuber[9] Kairamen The Ramen Eater uploaded a high-quality version of the meme, gaining over 50,000 views in 10 months. On August 6th, YouTuber[8] GreninjaBoy23 posted a video setting the clip to 14 different screams, gaining over 3 million views in eight months (shown below, right).



On April 10th, 2022, Redditor ChegiCH posted an edit of the clip to /r/Hololive[10] where Kirby falls down the pit followed by Virtual YouTuber Tsukumo Sana, gaining over 7,900 upvotes in a month (shown below).
