About
Lego Movie Clapping refers to an object labeling template taken from The Lego Movie 2: The Second One in which the character Emmett claps while the character Lucy looks confused. The template became popular on Reddit with labels demonstrating situations where one party would be excited about an occurrence and the other would be confused.
Origin
The still first appeared in The Lego Movie 2's first trailer released June 5th, 2018 (shown below).
On October 17th, 2020, Redditor TennisADHD[1] posted a meme using the template to /r/dankmemes, gaining over 67,000 points in five days (shown below).
Spread
Over the following several days, more Redditors on /r/dankmemes posted variations using the template. User @mijuzz7[2] posted an example on October 19th that gained over 73,000 points (shown below, left). On October 18th, user organic_crystal_meth[3] posted an example that gained over 17,000 points (shown below, right). The meme was covered by StayHipp.[4]
