Newsflash Asshole refers to an exploitable image macro series from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia in which the character Dennis exclaims to Mac "Newsflash, asshole! I've been hearing it the entire goddamn time!" The images are typically captioned with variations of the phrasal template "Newsflash, asshole! I've been X the entire goddamn time!"

Origin

The It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia episode "Mac and Dennis Move to the Suburbs" aired on February 3rd, 2016.^[1] In the episode, the characters Mac and Dennis move to a house in the Philadelphia suburbs. Though things initially seem idyllic, things quickly grow dark. A recurring problem with the house is a beeping of a fire alarm that Mac hears. Dennis denies hearing it for most of the episode until the end, when in a fit of rage he exclaims to Mac, "Newsflash asshole! I've been hearing it the entire goddamn time!"

Spread

On September 10th, 2016, It's Always Sunny Facebook fan page Charlie Day Quotes^[2] posted an image macro of the scene, gaining 3,400 likes and reactions (shown below).

On February 1st, 2017, Tumblr user hyrude^[3] uploaded one of the earliest edits of the image changing "hearing it" to "gay." The post gained over 64,000 notes (shown below).

Over the course of 2017, the exploitable spread primarily through Tumblr. For example, a popular Overwatch themed post by hanzorla^[4] gained over 32,000 notes (shown below, left). A post by marvelobsessions^[6] making a political point about racism gained over 216,000 notes (shown below, right).

The format has seen some spread outside Tumblr as well. On July 31st, 2017, Redditor MrDrMiranda^[5] uploaded a Trump-themed version to the It's Always Sunny subreddit, gaining 89 points (shown below, right). On July 6th, 2017, Instagram user scooby.dum^[7] posted a wholesome edit which gained 205 likes (shown below, right).
