JoJo Siwa is an American dancer, singer, actor and YouTuber. She got her start as a reality TV star in 2015 involved in children's beauty paegentry. She continued to have a career in social media, growing a large following on Instagram and TikTok, among other platforms. As she got older, she became a figure in LGBTQ+ discourse after her coming out announcement. In 2022, she got a haircut and was also not invited to the Nickolodeon Kid's Choice Awards despite her history with the network.

History

On January 20th, 2015, the episode of the Lifetime reality television series "JoJo With Bow" aired in the United States. The episode features one of the first appearances on television by Siwa, who joined the cast shortly after.^[4]

Two weeks later, on February 7th, Siwa published a question and answer video on her YouTube channel. The video (shown below, left) received more than 734,000 views in three-and-a-half years.

On May 17th, 2016, Siwa released the video for the single "Boomerang." Within two years, the video (shown below, right) received more than 565 million views.^[6]

The following year, on October 15th, 2017, the television series Lip Sync Battle Shorties, a lip-syncing and performance competition, premiered on Nickelodeon. Siwa hosts the show with Nick Cannon.^[5]

JoJo Siwa's Asbestos Makeup Controversy

JoJo Siwa's Asbestos Makeup Controversy refers to the recall of a makeup line branded by NJoJo Siwa which had tested positive for asbestos. After the recall, Siwa announced that the product had been removed from shelves.

On June 6th, 2019, the United States Food and Drug Administration tweeted,^[14][15] "Today, the FDA is releasing new results from its continued testing of cosmetic products for asbestos & is warning consumers to not use 2 additional products that have tested positive for asbestos & have been recalled." The post received more than 270 likes and 200 retweets in less than one month (shown below).

JoJo Siwa's Coming Out Announcement

JoJo Siwa's Coming Out Announcement refers to a social media post by JoJo Siwa confirming that she is a lesbian. Following the post, fans expressed excitement and support for Siwa. However, Siwa claims that paparazzi swatted her residence in hopes of forcing Siwa to leave her home for press photographs.

On January 22nd, 2021, Jojo Siwa tweeted^[16] a photograph of herself wearing a shirt that read, "Best. Gay. Cousin. Ever." She captioned the post, "My cousin got me a new shirt." This post acted as Siwa's coming out as a lesbian, receiving more than 1.2 million likes and 600,000 retweets in less than three days (shown below).

JoJo Siwa's Haircut

JoJo Siwa's Haircut refers to Siwa cutting off her iconic ponytail hairstyle and getting a short haircut in April 2022. She uploaded multiple Instagram Live videos and posts that became image macros in subsequent memes online. Many users related her haircut to a style typical of Karens or to being "butch" in reference to her sexuality.

On April 7th, 2022, JoJo Siwa posted a selfie on Instagram^[17] showcasing her new haircut. She had cut off her iconic, high ponytail, instead opting for a shorter pixie cut. In less than 24 hours, the photo received roughly 866,300 likes and thousands of comments (shown below).

JoJo Siwa Not Invited To Nickolodeon Kid's Choice Awards 2022

On April 10th, 2022, Nickolodeon's annual Kid's Choice Awards ceremony took place on live TV. On the day of the event, JoJo Siwa posted a TikTok^[9] that revealed she wasn't invited to the awards despite her history with the company and network. In less than 24 hours, the video received roughly 14.6 million plays and 2.4 million likes (shown below).

On the same day, JoJo's TikTok was reposted to Twitter^[10] by the internet news outlet Pop Base, wherein less than 24 hours, it received roughly 7.6 million views and 64,900 likes. Users on Twitter then reacted to the news en masse with many of them voicing their support for Siwa. For instance, Twitter^[11] user dejadehaan quote retweeted the video stating, "i feel so horrible for her, we all know why they didn’t invite her…" in reference to Siwa's sexuality as well as her haircut. The tweet received roughly 407,700 likes in one day (shown below).

Also on the 10th, Twitter^[12] user silkfl0wers_ referenced the Homophobic Dog meme, earning roughly 4,800 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, left). Twitter^[13] user Unmagiically posted a quote retweet that earned roughly 8,100 likes, referencing in it the I Know She Be Running A McDonald's Like The Navy meme (shown below, right).

There was not much support of Nickolodeon apparent online with most, if not all, users who were vocal about the controversy supporting Siwa's side.

Criticism

Feud with Danielle Bregoli

On July 21st, 2018, Siwa shared a post from a mother praising Siwa for being a better role model than Danielle Bregol, who is also known as rapper Bhad Bhabie and Cash Me Ousside. Siwa added the comment,^[7] "This post means so much to me. Thank you Nicole for writing this! I love being a positive role model and I want everyone to know it’s ok to be a kid and to not worry about growing up so fast! To everyone who supports me, I LOVE YOU! ❤️" The post (shown below, left) received more than 2,100 retweets and 18,000 likes in three weeks.

Five days later, Bregoli responded,^[8] "Suck my dick." The tweet (shown below, right) received more than 81,000 retweets and 352,000 likes in about two weeks.

Fandom

On November 19th, 2012, JoJo Siwa activated a Twitter ^[1] account. Within six years, the account has received more than 350,000 followers.

On July 20th, 2013, JoJo Siwa launched their Facebook ^[2] page. Within five years, the account has more than 480,000 likes and 500,000 followers.

In 2014, Siwa launched an Instagram, which has more than 7 million followers as of August 2018.^[3]
