About

Slim Jesus is the stage name of American rapper Robert Church, who gained much notoriety online following the release of his single "Drill Time" in August 2015.

Online History

On July 20th, 2015, Church released his first single "Drill Time" on Soundcloud,[1] where it gained over 4.48 million plays within five months. On August 18th, the music video for the track was released on YouTube, in which Church is shown with a group of young men brandishing prop firearms while holding dollar bills (shown below). In the first four months, the video garnered upwards of 19 million views and 68,000 comments.



On September 17th, TheSlimJesus YouTube channel uploaded a music video for the track "Buck Buck," in which Church is shown making purple drank while sitting on a car (shown below, left). On October 7th, the channel uploaded behind-the-scenes footage of Church in Cincinnati, Ohio (shown below, right). On October 16th, Church participated in an "ask me anything" (AMA) thread on the /r/hiphopheads[4] subreddit.

Reception

Following the release of the "Drill Time" music video, Church was widely mocked online for posturing as a gangster and brandishing firearms in the video. On September 10th, 2015, YouTuber Rap Catchup uploaded a video titled "Is Slim Jesus Fake?", featuring screenshots from Church's Facebook profile (shown below, left). On September 22nd, Complex uploaded a interview the rapper The Game, who criticized Church for pretending to be a gangster (shown below, right).

DJVlad Interview

On September 16th, YouTuber DJVlad uploaded an interview with Church, who stated that he does not actually live the lifestyle portrayed in his lyrics and videos (shown below).
