About
Rocker GF and BF Hands refers to an image macro of a girlfriend and boyfriend's hands side-by-side, making the "I Love You" symbol. One of the hands is skinny, pale and wearing colorful beaded bracelets while the other is tan, muscular and sporting a spiked leather bracelet. The image was first posted on Twitter in January 2021 but soon spread to other platforms like Tumblr and Reddit where it became the subject of object labeling.
Origin
On January 11th, 2021, Twitter[1] user @IIIoIizadoll posted the original images of her and her boyfriend's hands. The tweet attached two images (both shown below) and it received roughly 7,200 likes over the course of 11 months.
Spread
On the same day, January 11th, 2021, Tumblr[2] user bl00dykissez reposted the photos to her blog where they received roughly 4,400 notes over the course of 11 months. bl00dykissez captioned the images, "me and who[?]"
The image received attention in Russian meme circles early on in its existence. For instance, the first known edit of the image was made by Twitter[3] user @legush0nok who posted a tweet on February 21st, 2021, that attached two mirrored versions of the hands. The images (shown below) received 293 likes over 11 months via the tweet.
The first text-based meme made from the images was posted by Instagram[4] account @heart_shaped_box666 on April 23rd, 2021. The meme (shown below) labeled the hands with "She went to raves" and "He was a punk," and it received 147 likes over nine months' time.
The image of the two hands side-by-side received more meme attention in November 2021 when Tumblr[5] user katelyndanger posted a meme that object-labeled the two hands as "boyfriend" and "girlfriend," with the "boyfriend" label going over the skinnier, paler hand with pink beaded bracelets. The meme (shown below) gained roughly 8,900 notes over the course of one month.
The image was object-labeled more and more going into the rest of November 2021, with most meme creators keeping close to the BF/GF theme.
