Sandwiches at a Cheap Price!? Satisfactory refers to a series of memes based on a SpongeBob SquarePants frame of SpongeBob and Patrick running, with the characters commenting on a price of a certain item. Spawned by a meme about Subway's "five dollar footlong," the format achieved virality as users recaptioned and redrew it.
Origin
On May 31st, 2021, SpongeBob shitposting Instagram[1] meme page saboingabob posted a frame of SpongeBob and Patrick running captioned with humorous dialogue about getting a good deal on Subway's five dollar footlong sandwich. The post received over 660 likes in one year (shown below). The frame saw prior use in memes online, and is originally from episode 29a "Survival of the Idiots" of Season 2 of Spongebob SquarePants.[12]
Spread
In the following days, the post received viral spread on Instagram as multiple meme pages reposted it, with the top part of the caption eventually getting cropped out. For example, a June 9th, 2021, repost by Instagram[2] page supremecheetos received over 4,300 likes in one year. A June 13th repost by Instagram[3] page salad.snake, in which the top part of the caption was completely removed, gained over 45,600 likes in the same period. On June 15th, Redditor[4] OpossumConnoisseur reposted the meme to the /r/okbuddyretard subreddit, where it gained over 5,100 upvotes in roughly 11 months.
On July 5th, 2021, Twitter[5] user @_trollface made the earliest recaption meme based on the image, a Dame Da Ne Guy meme that gained over 140 retweets and 840 likes in one year (shown below, left). On July 6th, saboingabob, the creator of the original meme, posted[6] a follow-up meme in which SpongeBob, now Spunchbob, and Patrick complained about "six dollar footlong." The post gained over 760 likes on Instagram in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
In July and August 2021, the format saw continued spread online on Twitter and Instagram. On August 11th, 2021, Twitter[7] user @awesomepapers reposted the cropped original meme, with the post gaining over 2,600 retweets and 28,800 likes before being removed. On August 12th, 2021, Twitter[8] user @kitapult shared a Sonic the Hedgehog redraw of the meme, which garnered over 560 retweets and 2,800 likes in eight months (shown below, left). On August 14th, Instagram[9] user big_chungles posted a The Binding of Isaac version of the meme that gained over 7,300 likes in the same period (shown below, center).
On November 20th, Redditor[10] S_crufflord posted another "sequel" to the meme, with the post gaining over 430 retweets in five months. On November 27th, Redditor[11] Mr-biggie posted the original cropped meme and its "sequels" to the /r/gayspiderbrothel subreddit, where it gained over 1,900 upvotes in a similar timeframe.
The meme format saw continued use online in late 2021 and early 2022.
